Judge: Michael Vick must appear in person for plea
Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick won’t be allowed to
plead guilty to dogfighting charges by videoconference,
a judge ruled Thursday. Vick’s lawyers had requested that
he be allowed to enter the plea from federal prison in
Leavenworth, Kan., where he is serving a two-year term
since admitting he bankrolled a dogfighting operation and
helped execute dogs. But citing high public interest in the
case, Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell said it
would be better for Vick to appear in person. “I know from
my conversations with Mike and, more importantly, his family
that he’s looking forward to getting this behind him,” said
Lawrence Woodward, an attorney for the former Virginia Tech
and Atlanta Falcons star. Prosecutor Gerald Poindexter
preferred that Vick’s plea wait until his release from
federal prison. He objected to the video conferencing
motion on grounds that it has never been used in Virginia
and he didn’t want the county to set a precedent. Vick, 28,
is set to enter his plea on Nov. 25. Under the terms of his
plea deal, he would receive only a suspended sentence and a
year of probation. If he is able to resolve the state
dogfighting and animal cruelty charges, he would be
eligible to transfer to a halfway house for the final
six months of his term, according to court papers.

Falcons say Sam Baker has successful back surgery
Atlanta Falcons rookie left tackle Sam Baker underwent
successful back surgery on Thursday. “I’m happy to have the
procedure behind me,” Baker said in statement released by the
team. “I look forward to getting back on the field with my
teammates as soon as possible.” The Falcons released no
details on the procedure and have not announced a timetable
for Baker’s return. Baker, a first-round pick from USC, has
started five games but was held out of last week’s game
against Philadelphia with what was called a hip injury.
Baker was examined by specialists who found a problem in his
lower back. Baker had a discectomy, a surgery to remove
herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the
spinal cord, according to WebMD.com. Baker also missed the
Sept. 28 game at Carolina with a concussion after leaving
two games earlier in the month with head injuries.
Falcons coach Mike Smith said Todd Weiner, who started for
Baker at Philadelphia last week before leaving with a sore
knee, should start at left tackle on Sunday at Oakland.
Weiner didn’t practice on Wednesday and had limited
participation on Thursday.
Obama, McCain to be interviewed for ‘MNF’
Are Barack Obama and John McCain ready for some football?
ESPN says the presidential candidates are planning to
participate in one-on-one interviews via satellite that
would air at halftime of “Monday Night Football,” the day
before the election. ESPN’s Chris Berman will do the
segments earlier Monday, if the candidates’ schedules
permit, and they’ll air at about 10:15 p.m. EST.
The interviews will give both candidates a last major
chance to appeal to Americans during a coveted spot on
prime-time television. “Monday Night Football” has
averaged 12.2 million viewers this season. The game,
between the host Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh
Steelers, will be the first NFL game played in the D.C.
area on the Monday night before a presidential election
in 24 years. The Redskins defeated the Atlanta Falcons
27-14 on Nov. 5, 1984; Ronald Reagan was re-elected the
following day. Obama previously appeared on “Monday Night
Football” on Dec. 11, 2006, when he opened the broadcast
of a game involving his hometown Chicago Bears by parodying
his own upcoming official announcement of his intention to
run for the presidency. “I am ready,” he said, before
putting on a Bears baseball cap, “for the Bears to go
all the way, baby!”

Bengals S Dexter Jackson out for season
Bengals safety Dexter Jackson, who has missed most of the
season with a thumb injury, has been placed on injured reserve
with a hamstring injury suffered in practice. Jackson missed
five of the Bengals’ eight games because of the thumb. He
returned and played in the last two games, but hurt himself
in practice Wednesday. He was placed on injured reserve Thursday.
The Bengals signed free agent safety Chris Crocker, a sixth-year
player from Marshall. He started the season with Miami, played
in six games and was released on Oct. 21. Crocker has also
played for Cleveland and Atlanta.
Knee injury might end season for Colts CB Jackson
The Indianapolis Colts could lose starting cornerback Marlin
Jackson for the rest of the season after he injured his knee
in practice. Coach Tony Dungy said Jackson was injured during
Wednesday’s workout when he tried to stop. The players were
not even in pads when it occurred. Dungy on Thursday did not
provide many details about the injury because Jackson was
still getting a second opinion. But Dungy said the initial
tests showed Jackson had significant damage to the knee and
would miss an extended period, probably the rest of the year.
