Dan Marino Sr., father of NFL great, dies at 71

Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino’s father has died.
Dan Marino Sr. died Sunday in Weston, said Linda Elachko
of the John N. Elachko Funeral Home in Pittsburgh. She didn’t
immediately know the cause of his death. Dan Marino Sr. was 71.
“My dad was the most loving father, grandfather and husband,”
Dan Marino said. “He was also a friend to everyone and best
coach anyone could ever have.” Miami Dolphins owner Wayne
Huizenga said in a statement that the team was saddened to
learn of the death of the former quarterback’s father.
“A visible member of the Dolphins family, he was one of the
team’s biggest fans ever since we drafted Dan in 1983,”
Huizenga said. “Along with his wife, Veronica, Dan Sr.
instilled a sense of character in his son and raised him to
be a model husband, father and citizen. We want to extend our
sympathies to Veronica, Dan and the entire Marino family.”
Marino Sr. was a longtime newspaper delivery driver in his
hometown of Pittsburgh and moved to Florida after he retired.
The younger Marino was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of
Fame in 2005 after playing for the Dolphins from 1983 to 1999,
with career statistics that include 4,967 completions, 8,358
passing attempts for 61,361 yards and was the first player to
pass for 5,000 yards in a season. Services will be held
Tuesday in Davie, followed by visitation Thursday and a
funeral service Friday in Pittsburgh. Other survivors include
daughters Cindi Richert and Debbie Berger and 11 grandchildren.

Titans, Cardinals, Giants clinch divisions

It’s on to the NFL playoffs for the Titans, Giants and Cardinals.
The Cardinals? Indeed, Arizona clinched the NFC West on Sunday
with a 34-10 rout of St. Louis. The Cardinals (8-5) will host a
postseason game for the first time since 1947, when they called
Chicago home. It’s their first division crown since 1975, when
they represented St. Louis. It’s been so long, some players
weren’t even sure how to celebrate. “My coach was like ‘Act
like you’ve been there before, act like you’ve been there
before,”‘ defensive tackle Darnell Dockett said. “I said ‘
Coach, I ain’t been there before. I don’t know how to act
right now.”‘ The clinchings by Tennessee and New York weren’t
particularly surprising considering their runaway records. But
the Super Bowl champion Giants (11-2) backed into the top spot
in the NFC East after a 20-14 loss to Philadelphia. Pittsburgh
then did the Giants a nice turn, edging Dallas 20-13 to hand
the division to New York. The Giants’ loss meant the Titans
have the best record in the league following their 28-9 victory
against Cleveland. At 12-1, the Titans have the best mark in
franchise history and own the AFC South. “For the guys that have
been here for a few years and that have been through the tough
times, to be on a team that is now 12-1 and AFC Division South
winners is huge,” veteran linebacker Keith Bulluck said.
On the verge of a division championship is Denver, which
holds a three-game lead over San Diego in the AFC West. The
Broncos (8-5) rallied past Kansas City 24-17 and would clinch
the division by winning any of its remaining games: at Carolina,
home for Buffalo and at San Diego. Pittsburgh (10-3) also is
closing in on a playoff berth, if not the AFC North. The
Steelers’ win Sunday left them in control of the division
with a showdown at Baltimore next week.

Broncos lose another running back

Broncos rookie running back Peyton Hillis left Denver’s game
against Kansas City late in the first half Sunday after
straining his right hamstring. Hillis, who rejuvenated the
Broncos’ banged-up backfield since moving over from fullback
last month, is the sixth tailback to go down for Denver this
season. He was replaced by Tatum Bell, who was signed last
month. Hillis was hurt when he went up high for a pass from
Jay Cutler and was hit by two defenders as he came down with
the 11-yard reception at the Chiefs 34. He walked gingerly
off the field after staying down a minute. The Broncos have
four tailbacks on IR – Michael Pittman, Anthony Alridge,
Andre Hall and Ryan Torain – and Selvin Young (groin) has
just one carry in the past two months.

Patriots sign linebacker Junior Seau

The New England Patriots have signed 39-year-old linebacker
Junior Seau to replace Adalius Thomas. Seau is a 19-year
veteran and 12-time Pro Bowl player. He played 27 games for
the Patriots the last two seasons but hasn’t been with a team
this season. Thomas will miss the rest of the season because
of an arm injury and was placed on injured reserve Friday.
The Patriots also are without injured linebackers
Eric Alexander and Pierre Woods.
