Redskins place Samuels on IR, add 2 linemen
Five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels was placed on
injured reserve Tuesday as the Washington Redskins made a
slew of moves following an injury-filled loss to the Baltimore
Ravens. Samuels will require surgery after tearing his right
triceps in the fourth quarter of the 24-10 loss. Also placed
on injured reserve was offensive lineman Justin Geisinger, who
sustained a meniscus injury in his left knee while serving as
an emergency fill-in for Samuels and injured right tackle
Jon Jansen. Jansen, who sprained a ligament in his left knee
in the fourth quarter, remains on the active roster, although
it remains unclear whether he will be able to play again this
season. Stephon Heyer and Jason Fabini are expected to start
at tackle Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. To fill the
roster spots, the Redskins promoted tackle Devin Clark from
the practice squad and also signed Will Montgomery, a third-
year guard who has played 13 career games with Carolina and
the New York Jets. The Redskins also released defensive end
Erasmus James and signed receiver Marques Hagans and guard
Rueben Riley to the practice squad. Receiver Devin Aromashodu
was signed off the Redskins’ practice squad to the Chicago Bears
active roster. James, acquired in a trade in May after three
injury-plagued seasons with Minnesota, never regained his old
form and was inactive for eight of the Redskins’ 13 games.
Broncos put Hillis on IR, promote Boyd
The Denver Broncos promoted Cory Boyd from their practice squad
Tuesday to take the place of Peyton Hillis, their fifth tailback
to go on injured reserve. Hillis tore his right hamstring on
Sunday. The Broncos also waived safety Calvin Lowry and signed
guard Pat Murray off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.
Hillis started six games for Denver this season, rushing 68
times for 343 yards and five touchdowns and catching 14 passes
for 179 yards and a touchdown. He had a four-game streak of at
least one score when he got hurt. And he became the first rookie
in club history to post both a 100-yard rushing game and a 100-
yard receiving game in the same season. Boyd spent the last
five weeks on Denver’s practice squad after he was waived by
Tampa Bay last summer. The Buccaneers selected him in the
seventh round out of South Carolina but waived him July 26.
Murray is a first-year player from Truman State who had been
on Seattle’s practice squad since Sept. 1. He entered the NFL
when Green Bay signed him as a college free agent in May 2007
and was waived by the Packers just before last season. Lowry
played in 10 games and started three times for the Broncos.
He had 21 tackles and broke up three passes after joining the
team off waivers from Tennessee on Aug. 31.

Lions fine Raiola $7,500 for offensive gesture
Detroit center Dominic Raiola’s offensive gesture toward
heckling Lions fans will cost him $7,500. The team announced
the fine against the eight-year veteran on Tuesday, two days
after Detroit fell to 0-13 with a 20-16 loss to Minnesota at
Ford Field. The money will be donated to a local charity. Lions
executive vice president Tom Lewand says in a statement that
the club apologizes to any fans offended by Raiola’s gesture.
But Raiola said Monday that he had no remorse and was tired
of being a doormat. Detroit has lost 20 of its past 21 and is
31-94 since 2001. An NFL spokesman said Monday the league was
investigating.
Rookie cornerback promoted to fill out roster
The Tennessee Titans promoted rookie cornerback Cary Williams
from the practice squad Tuesday to take the roster spot vacated
by the suspension of reserve defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson.
Vickerson started serving a four-game suspension for violating
the NFL’s steroid and related substances policy last week and
will miss the final three games of the regular season before
becoming eligible to return for the postseason. Williams was
the Titans’ seventh-round draft pick out of Division II Washburn.
Tennessee also signed defensive tackle Derrick Jones of Grand
Valley State to the practice squad. Jones was among five
defensive linemen worked out Tuesday, including Steve Harris
of Florida, Alex Morrow of USC, Jordan Reffett of Washington
and Missouri’s Lorenzo Williams.

Lions release CB Brian Kelly
-The Detroit Lions released Brian Kelly on Tuesday, after the
veteran cornerback had complained recently about his lack of
playing time. The 32-year-old Kelly suited up Sunday against
Minnesota but did not play. He also did not play in Week 5
against Chicago. The Lions signed cornerback and kick returner
Dexter Wynn to take his place. Kelly spent 10 seasons with
Tampa Bay before becoming a free agent and signing a three-year
deal with the Lions in March. Detroit coach Rod Marinelli was a
defensive line coach for the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2005. Kelly
started 11 games this season, making 26 tackles and no interceptions.
Wynn spent his first two NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles
and played the following two seasons for the Houston Texans. In 51
career games with 41 starts, he has averaged 21.4 yards on kickoff
returns and 8.6 yards per punt return.
