Craft, member of Eagles title teams, dead at 89

William Russell “Russ” Craft, a member of the Philadelphia
Eagles’ 1948 and 1949 championship teams who shares the NFL
record of four interceptions in a game, died Tuesday. He was 89.
Craft, a 10-year NFL veteran who was also a player and defensive
coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died in Wellsburg, W.Va.,
the Eagles said in a statement Thursday. No cause of death was
immediately given. Craft was a defensive back and halfback who
played with the Eagles from 1946-53 and with the Steelers from
1953-55. The two-time Pro Bowl selection had 22 career
interceptions, including four in a game against the Chicago
Cardinals in September 1950. He shares that NFL record with
17 players. Selected in the 15th round of the 1943 draft out
of Alabama, Craft played in 100 career NFL games. He scored
seven regular-season touchdowns and one TD in the Eagles’
28-21 loss to the Cardinals in the 1947 title game. He ran
the Craft Service Station in Weirton, W.Va., from 1951-85,
and served two terms as the Brooke County Sheriff (1960-72).

Dolphins hire DeGuglielmo as OL coach

New York Giants assistant offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo
was hired Thursday as offensive line coach of the Miami Dolphins
to replace Mike Maser, who was fired a day earlier. DeGuglielmo
spent the past five years as assistant offensive line coach for
the Giants, who won the Super Bowl last season and led the NFL
in rushing in 2008. Guard Chris Snee and center Shaun O’Hara
were selected for the Pro Bowl this season. DeGuglielmo and
Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano worked together from 1991-93
at Boston University, where Sparano was offensive coordinator
and DeGuglielmo coached the offensive line. DeGuglielmo also
coached at South Carolina and Connecticut. Miami fired Maser
after one season with the team, the first shake-up in Sparano’s
staff. Sparano became coach a year ago and led the turnaround
from a 1-15 record in 2007 to 11-6 and a playoff berth in 2008.
The offensive line is considered one of the Dolphins’ weakest
areas, despite the addition of tackle Jake Long, the first
overall pick in the 2007 draft. Miami struggled to run consistently
from its base offense this season. Maser has been an NFL
offensive line coach for 14 seasons. He was out of football
in 2007, but was the first assistant hired by Sparano last year.

Former NFL player pleads not guilty in fatal crash

A former NFL player accused of killing a motor scooter driver
in a hit-and-run has pleaded not guilty. Billy Jenkins entered
his plea Thursday and is due in court Feb. 5. He is charged with
vehicular homicide, leaving the scene, driving under the
influence and failure to provide insurance. Jenkins was on the
St. Louis Rams’ Super Bowl championship team in 1999 and played
for the Denver Broncos in 2000-01. He retired in 2002.
Authorities say 51-year-old Tracy Gill died when his scooter
was rear-ended Aug. 28 in the Denver suburb of Aurora. If
convicted on all counts, Jenkins could get eight to 12 years
in prison. He is free on bail.

Birk, Dawkins, Warner finalists for Payton award

Brian Dawkins of Philadelphia and Kurt Warner of Arizona, who
will face each other in Sunday’s NFC championship game, are
finalists for the NFL’s Man of the Year award. Matt Birk of
Minnesota is also a finalist for the award, named for the late
Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, which goes annually
to the player who combines on-field excellence with off-the-
field community service. The winner will be announced before
the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. Warner, who at 37 quarterbacked the
Cardinals to their first championship game in 60 years, created
a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor construction
throughout the Midwest. He has raised over $450,000, including
a $100,000 personal contribution, $100,000 from his foundation,
and $100,000 each from the Cardinals and the NFL Disaster Relief
Fund. Dawkins, the Eagles’ six-time Pro Bowl safety, was
selected 2008 Father of the Year by the American Diabetes
Association. He contributed $10,000 to Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia in the names of his twin daughters, who faced
complications from a premature birth. He also provides a local
high school football player for game tickets each week.
Birk has been the Vikings’ man of the year seven straight
times. He has established the HIKE Foundation – for hope,
inspiration and knowledge to help give educational opportunities
and resources to youngsters in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. For the
last two years, he has donated part of his salary to help
retired players in need.

Caldwell ready to replace 1 assistant

New Colts coach Jim Caldwell said on Wednesday that special
teams coach Russ Purnell would not be retained next season.
It’s the second staff decision Caldwell has made since Tony
Dungy announced he was retiring Monday. Caldwell said Tuesday
during his introductory news conference that last year’s
offensive assistant Frank Reich, the former Buffalo Bills
quarterback, would be the new quarterbacks coach. That was
Caldwell’s job the past seven years. Like Caldwell, Purnell
joined Dungy’s staff in 2002. But during most of Purnell’s
tenure, the Colts ranked near the bottom of the league in
punt return and kickoff return coverage. Purnell coached
previously with Seattle, Tennessee, Baltimore and the Houston
Oilers, before they moved to Tennessee. Purnell, 60, also
coached at Southern Cal in the 1980s.

Packers promote Slocum, hire Fuller

The Green Bay Packers promoted Shawn Slocum to special teams
coach on Thursday to replace the retired Mike Stock. Slocum
served as the Packers’ special teams assistant coach the past
three seasons, and coached 15 seasons at the collegiate level
before coming to Green Bay. The Packers hired Curtis Fuller
to fill Slocum’s slot. “Shawn has made a significant impact
in developing many of our core special teams players,” Packers
coach Mike McCarthy said. “Curtis is a young, up-and-coming
coach who will be a positive addition to our staff.” Fuller
is a former NFL defensive back who played safety for Seattle,
Green Bay and Carolina before being the special teams quality
control assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders in 2007 and
a coaching intern in Green Bay. The 69-year-old Stock retired
two weeks ago after 44 years in coaching, but had previously
said he hoped he could return for a fourth season with the
Packers. The unit’s problems figured in Green Bay’s 6-10
season and failure to make the playoffs. After the season,
the Packers also dismissed six assistant coaches, including
defensive coordinator Bob Sanders.
