Raiders cut Harris, Griffith

-The Oakland Raiders released veteran tackle Kwame Harris
and fullback Justin Griffith on Monday, freeing more than
$8 million in salary cap space. Harris, a first-round draft
pick by San Francisco in 2003, joined the Raiders as a free
agent last year. He would have collected a $6 million roster
bonus had he remained with the team. Harris struggled late in
the season with his blocking and with penalties. Griffith, who
tore up his knee against Baltimore on Oct. 26, would have
counted just over $1 million against the cap. The Raiders also
have a replacement on hand in Oren O’Neal. The Raiders previously
released receiver Ronald Curry, safety Gibril Wilson and defensive
end Kalimba Edwards to help get under the salary cap. Owner Al
Davis has now cut ties with almost all the big-money free agents
he brought in last offseason, having released cornerback DeAngelo
Hall midway through the 2008 schedule. The only one remaining is
receiver Javon Walker, who could be gone before collecting a
$5 million bonus payment on March 3. Walker had just 15 catches
for 196 yards last season after signing a $55 million, six-year
deal. He missed the final seven games of the season with an ankle
injury.

Falcons part ways with S Lawyer Milloy

Safety Lawyer Milloy, a four-time Pro Bowler, will not be
returning to the Atlanta Falcons. The team announced it will not
re-sign the 35-year-old Milloy, who can pursue other options when
free agency begins on Friday. Milloy was the Falcons’ starting
safety the last three years. This past season, he was third on
the team in both solo tackles (76) and overall stops (117).
“As an organization, we felt it was in the best interest of
both parties to let Lawyer test the free agent market,”
Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “He
significantly contributed in his three seasons with the Falcons
and we were proud to have him here. We wish him the best as he
takes the next step in his career.” Milloy, raised in Tacoma,
Wash., has expressed a desire to return home to finish his
career with the Seattle Seahawks, who are now led by former
Falcons coach Jim Mora. Milloy broke in with the New England
Patriots after being drafted in the second round in 1996. He
played seven seasons with the Patriots and three with the Buffalo
Bills before signing with the Falcons in 2006. Even though he
provided leadership to a young secondary, the Falcons decided
to pursue younger options at safety, perhaps through the draft.

Cowboys employ silent treatment at NFL combine

Jerry Jones wants to be the sole voice of the Dallas Cowboys.
During this weekend’s NFL annual scouting combine, nearly every
team sent either coaches or front office officials – or both –
to the media room to speak with reporters. Even Patriots coach
Bill Belichick showed up at the podium, the first time that’s
happened since this format began in 2001. But the Cowboys, one
of the league’s marquee teams, were noticeably absent.
NFL officials did not give a statement but said they tried to
get a representative from each team to appear. They estimated
only five teams did not send anyone, including the usually chatty
Cowboys. The reason? Jones wants to be owner and spokesman for
the team during the offseason, not even letting coach Wade
Phillips speak. “Where I’m coming from here, I just want to
make sure you’re not getting bits and pieces of information,”
Jones told The Dallas Morning News on Saturday night. “That’s
not doing anybody any good and you’re not making accurate
reports.” Last year, the Cowboys wasted a promising start and
reports surfaced that there was infighting on the team. Dallas
finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. Jones hasn’t said whether
outspoken receiver Terrell Owens, will return next season, and he
offered no new information on Owens’ future this week.

Colts agree to release WR Marvin Harrison

Marvin Harrison refused to take a pay cut. The Indianapolis Colts
couldn’t afford to keep him without one. On Monday, the two sides
reached agreement on one thing: Harrison will be a free agent.
Agent Tom Condon told The Associated Press that Indianapolis has
agreed to release the franchise’s all-time leading receiver,
although an official announcement is not expected until Tuesday
or Wednesday. The decision comes one day after team president
Bill Polian said he hoped to cut a deal that would keep Harrison
in Indy. When Harrison said no, the Colts said farewell.
“Basically, we were not able to come to any kind of agreement,
it was not contentious and the Colts have agreed to release him,”
Condon said in a phone interview. Team officials declined comment
and a message was left by The Associated Press at the office of
team owner Jim Irsay. It’s not a surprising move because the
Colts would save about $6 million, based on Harrison’s base
salary. They would still be charged for prorated bonuses from
the $66 million deal he signed in December 2004.
The Colts found it too expensive for a 36-year-old receiver
coming off one of the least productive seasons of his career.
Harrison ranks second in NFL history with 1,102 receptions, and
the move will disappoint many Colts fans, who embraced Harrison
as a favorite. They referred to Harrison, Peyton Manning and
Edgerrin James as “The Triplets,” and Harrison was one of the
franchise’s most identifiable player in the last decade.

CB Hanson re-signs with Eagles

Cornerback Joselio Hanson agreed to terms on a five-year deal
with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. Hanson, 27, signed as
a free agent before the 2006 season and has played in all 48
regular-season games and five postseason games since joining
the Eagles. He recorded his first interception this season in
a Thanksgiving night victory over the Arizona Cardinals and
returned a fumble 96 yards for his first touchdown against
the Dallas Cowboys. He finished with one sack and 32 tackles.

Browns willing to keep QB Anderson

General manager George Kokinis said Friday that the Cleveland
Browns are in no hurry to get rid of Derek Anderson and were
willing to let Anderson battle Brady Quinn for the starting
quarterback job. Kokinis was in Indianapolis for the annual NFL
scouting combine. There has been speculation that the Browns
wanted to get rid of Anderson because of his $5 million roster
bonus, due next month. Neither Anderson nor Quinn finished
last season because of injuries. In a separate meeting with
reporters from Northeastern Ohio, new Browns coach Eric
Mangini expressed interest in Giants running back Derrick
Ward. Ward will become a free agent next week. The 5-foot-11,
228-pound Ward rushed for 1,025 yards for the Giants last season.
He will be 29 in August.

Carey signs multiyear deal with Dolphins

Tackle Vernon Carey signed a multiyear contract extension with
the Miami Dolphins and won’t become an unrestricted free agent
next week, the team said Friday. Carey, the team’s first-round
draft choice in 2004, has started 59 games in a row. The signing
means the Dolphins are set at tackle, with 2008 top pick Jake
Long returning on the left side. The Dolphins still hope to
upgrade the middle of their line this offseason. Miami has four
players set to become unrestricted free agents – linebacker
Channing Crowder, cornerback Andre Goodman and safeties
Yeremiah Bell and Renaldo Hill.

Holmes fined $10,000 for Super Bowl TD celebration

Santonio Holmes’ last-minute touchdown catch won the Super Bowl
for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It cost him 10 grand, too. The NFL
fined Holmes $10,000 for using the football as a prop during his
post-catch celebration, which came well after the play ended.
Holmes, impersonating NBA star LeBron James’ pregame ritual of
tossing powder into the air, shook the football and tossed it
after his 6-yard scoring catch with 35 seconds sealed Pittsburgh’s
27-23 victory. The Steelers were not penalized for excessive
celebration, apparently because the officials were getting ready
for the point-after attempt and did not see Holmes’ display in
the corner of the end zone. Two weeks ago, NFL vice president
of officiating Mike Pereira said the celebration should have
drawn a 15-yard penalty on the following kickoff. Such penalties
result in an automatic $10,000 fine. However, NFL commissioner
Roger Goodell said before the Pro Bowl that the NFL competition
committee may consider making such celebrations legal if they
occur long after a play ends. “As you know, part of this rule
is to avoid having a reaction from opposing players and, from
what I could see, only seeing it once, it didn’t seem like it
was anywhere near that,” Goodell said. Holmes auctioned off
the gloves he wore during the catch for $70,200, but that
money will be donated to charity.
