Browns sign RB Noah Herron

Running back Noah Herron has signed with the Cleveland Browns,
who lost Jason Wright to free agency earlier this week.
The 26-year-old Herron was drafted by Pittsburgh in the seventh
round in 2005. He has rushed for 273 yards, caught 29 passes for
211 yards and scored five touchdowns in 23 career games with
Green Bay and Tampa Bay. The 5-foot-11, 225-pounder could fill
Wright's role as a part-time back behind Jamal Lewis. Wright
signed a two-year contract with Arizona on Tuesday. Coincidentally,
Wright and Herron were teammates at Northwestern. Herron played
16 games for the Packers in 2006. He spent all of 2007 on Green
Bay's injured reserve list with a knee injury and was inactive
for all four games he was on Tampa Bay's roster last year.

Stallworth attorney: Blood test not released

Authorities have yet to release blood tests for Cleveland Browns
wide receiver Donte Stallworth, who authorities say fatally struck
a pedestrian in Miami Beach a week ago. Meanwhile, his attorney
is denying media reports that the tests show Stallworth was
driving drunk. Christopher Lyons said Saturday that neither
police nor the state attorney's office have released the results
of toxicology tests. They have not said specifically when they
will be released. The Miami Herald and local TV news, citing
unnamed people, have reported that Stallworth's blood-alcohol
level was above Florida's legal limit. A Miami Beach police
spokesman says the blood test results won't be released until
the investigation is closed. Stallworth hasn't been charged.

Detroit Lions to retire Cory Smith’s No. 93 in ‘09

The Detroit Lions are retiring the number 93 jersey for the
upcoming season in memory of defensive lineman Corey Smith,
who disappeared when a boat capsized off the Florida coast.
Smith, a free agent who played the past three seasons with
Detroit, is one of three men who went missing off the Gulf
Coast after their 21-foot fishing boat capsized in rough seas
three weeks ago. Galen Duncan of the Lions’ front office
announced the one-year retirement of Smith’s jersey number
at a memorial service Saturday in Smith’s hometown of Richmond, Va.
Several hundred mourners, including Smith’s former teammates from
the NFL, North Carolina State and high school attended the service.
Smith’s high school coach, Kevin Burden, says he prays for a
guardian angel who wears the number 93.

NFL players promoting improved physical education

Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall says the battle
against childhood lethargy extends to his own home.
“Nowadays, kids aren’t out playing in the streets and hanging
out and having a good time,” Hall said at a Capitol Hill news
conference Thursday to promote children’s fitness legislation.
“They’re sitting in front of video games, they’re eating a lot
of fast food. Even my kids – I’m trying to get them away from
that too.” Hall, who called childhood obesity an epidemic, was
one of seven NFL players in town to push for passage of the FIT
Kids Act. The bill would require schools, districts and states
to report on students’ physical activity, and to give youngsters
health and nutritional information. They joined lawmakers,
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, health advocates, NFL
cheerleaders and dozens of schoolchildren for the soggy pep
rally, held in a light rain on the West Lawn of the Capitol.
Players led the children in jumping jacks, stretching and
running-in-place exercises and signed autographs. “It’s insane
that kids go to school and we work on their minds, but we don’t
work on their bodies,” said Baltimore Ravens special teams
standout Brendon Ayanbadejo. “We need to get kids playing 60
minutes a day.” That was a reference to NFL PLAY 60, a youth
health and fitness campaign aimed at getting youngsters active
for an hour a day. “What we’re here about is really the future
of our country,” said Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat who
chairs the Agriculture Committee and sponsored the bill in the
Senate. Harkin warned that the youth generation could live
shorter lives than their parents. The House sponsor, Rep. Ron
Kind, D-Wis., is a former Harvard quarterback. “It’s impossible
to develop a healthy mind without a healthy body, and that’s
what FIT Kids is all about,” he said. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn.,
argued that kids are overmedicated, adding that the best
antidepressant is sweat. “The human body was made to move,” he
said. Other players at the rally included Ravens Jared Gaither,
Jameel McClain, Troy Smith and Marcus Maxwell, and Redskin
Fred Smoot.

Cards agree to one-year deal with Elton Brown

The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to a one-year contract with
offensive lineman Elton Brown. Terms were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-5, 332-pound Brown is a four-year veteran who appeared
in all 16 regular-season games and all four postseason games for
the Cardinals last season. The Cardinals also signed tight end
Anthony Becht, defensive tackle Rodney Leisle and center Donovan
Raiola to one-year contracts. The team also hired T.J. McCreight
as director of pro personnel. He had been director of player
personnel for the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons.

Patriots sign veteran WR Joey Galloway

New England has signed veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway,
giving the Patriots two of the most prolific active receivers
in the NFL. The 37-year-old Galloway has a 15.7 yards-per-reception
career average. That leads all active NFL players with 300 or more
career receptions and is just ahead of New England’s Randy Moss,
who has a career average of 15.6. Galloway and Moss are also among
only nine active receivers with 10,000 or more career receiving
yards. Galloway has caught 682 passes for 10,710 yards in his 14
seasons with Seattle, Dallas and Tampa Bay. Moss has 843 receptions
for 13,201 yards. Galloway was released by the Bucs in February
after an injury-plagued year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

FB Weaver agrees to 1-year deal with Eagles

Fullback Leonard Weaver has agreed to a one-year contract
with Philadelphia, giving the Eagles a much-needed blocker
in the backfield. Weaver spent his first four seasons with
Seattle. He ran for 130 yards and caught 20 passes for two
touchdowns last season. The Eagles played without a true
fullback most of last season, and it cost them in several
short-yardage situations. Converted halfback Tony Hunt
started but was cut after seeing limited action. Defensive
tackle Dan Klecko was moved to fullback and Kyle Eckel was
signed off waivers to add depth. Weaver, 6-foot and 242 pounds,
is a solid blocker and can be effective with the ball. He has
356 yards rushing (4.4 yards per carry) and one TD in 46 career
games. He also has 60 receptions for 547 yards.

Ravens sign tight end L.J. Smith from Philadelphia

The Baltimore Ravens have signed free agent tight end L.J.
Smith to a one-year contract. Head coach John Harbaugh said
Friday that he knows what type of player the Ravens are getting
in Smith from his days coaching in Philadelphia. “I had the
opportunity to be around L.J. for a number of years in
Philadelphia, and there is a comfort level that we have with
each other,” Harbaugh said. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 258 pound six-year
NFL veteran, has caught 231 passes for 2,525 yards and 18
touchdowns in 86 regular season games. Smith has also played
in four playoff games and started 65 regular season games.
Smith, 28, led the Eagles in receptions and receiving yards
in 2005 with a career-high 61 catches for 682 yards.
