Detroit Lions sign veteran OT Ephraim Salaam

The Detroit Lions have signed veteran offensive tackle Ephraim
Salaam as a free agent. Terms were not disclosed on Thursday.
The 32-year-old Salaam has played for four teams since being
drafted by Atlanta in the seventh round of the 1998 draft. He
spent the last three seasons playing for Houston. Lions coach
Jim Schwartz says Salaam will see time at both tackle positions,
backing up Jeff Backus and Gosder Cherilus.

Dolphins DE Starks charged with hitting officer

Miami Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks has been charged
with using his truck to hit a police officer who tried to stop
the vehicle on foot. Miami Beach Police say the officer tried
to stop the 25-year-old player when he was driving a truck
packed with 13 people early Sunday in heavy traffic. They say
the vehicle was meant for four people. Police say Starks kept
slowly moving forward even as the officer was beside the truck.
They say Starks swerved the vehicle slightly, hitting the officer
in the chest and pinning him against another vehicle. The officer
wasn’t injured, but Starks was charged with aggravated battery.
Starks remained in a Miami jail Sunday afternoon. A message left
at his agent’s office was not immediately returned.

Saints sign WR Paris Warren

The New Orleans Saints have signed receiver Paris Warren, a
former seventh-round draft pick by Tampa Bay. He showed promise
with the Buccaneers before dislocating his left ankle while
making a game-winning touchdown catch in the last preseason
game of 2007. Prior to the injury, Warren, now 26, appeared to
have locked up a roster spot with the Buccaneers. He had seven
receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns in that final
preseason game. Warren was drafted out of Utah in 2005. He played
in eight games in 2006, catching five passes for 63 yards.
To make room for Warren on the roster, the Saints waived guard
Shawn Flanagan.

Former Chicago Cardinal Lunceford dead at 75

Former Baylor and Chicago Cardinals offensive lineman David
Glenn Lunceford has died after a lengthy illness. He was 75.
Lunceford died Saturday in a Tyler nursing home, said a spokeswoman
for the Hilliard Funeral Home in nearby Van. He had Alzheimer’s,
according to an obituary that appeared on the funeral home’s Web
site. Lunceford was a two-way starting tackle at Baylor, and
played in the 1954 Gator Bowl and the 1957 Sugar Bowl.
He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals and was one of two
rookies who made the team in 1957. He was the starting offensive
guard for 12 games that season. Injuries shortened his pro career.
Lunceford worked in the oil business until he retired in 1992.
Tyler is about 100 miles east of Dallas.

The New York Giants have added depth to their offensive line

Stallworth arraignment delayed in Fla. case

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth’s arraignment
in Miami on DUI manslaughter charges has been delayed until
next month. A judge granted prosecutors’ request to delay the
arraignment from Thursday until June 4. Prosecutors gave no
reason for the delay request and Stallworth’s attorney did not
oppose it. Stallworth has not yet entered a plea to charges he
was driving drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian on
March 14. Tests showed Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was .126,
well above Florida’s .08 limit. The 28-year-old Stallworth
faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He is free on
$200,000 bail.

Jaguars waive Woods, acquire Brackenridge

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived receiver D’Juan Woods and
acquired cornerback Tyron Brackenridge off waivers. Woods,
signed as a rookie free agent out of Oklahoma State in 2007,
spent parts of the last two seasons on Jacksonville’s practice
squad. He played in one game, but became expendable when the
team signed free agent Torry Holt and selected three receivers
in last month’s NFL draft. Also Wednesday, the Jaguars were
awarded Brackenridge off waivers from the New York Jets.
Signed by Kansas City as an undrafted rookie in 2007, the
5-foot-11, 189-pound Brackenridge played in 14 games with the
Chiefs the past two seasons. He had 20 tackles and two forced
fumbles. He signed with the Jets on Feb. 19 and was waived
Tuesday.

Spokesman: Shockey taken to hospital, doing fine

New Orleans Saints team spokesman says tight end Jeremy Shockey
was taken to a hospital but is doing fine after being treated
for dehydration. Greg Bensel confirmed Sunday that the team was
aware that Shockey was released from the hospital but did not
release many details. Celebrity gossip site TMZ.com first reported
that paramedics wheeled Shockey out on a stretcher from a pool
party at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas after he was found
unconscious Sunday afternoon. Shockey has been in the Pro Bowl
four times, most recently in 2006. Before playing for the Saints,
Shockey was with the New York Giants. In eight seasons, Shockey
has 421 receptions for 4,711 yards and 27 touchdowns.
