Pontiac Silverdome may be headed for auction block

The former home of the Detroit Lions may be headed to the
auction block. Emergency Financial Manager Fred Leeb says
attempts to sell the Pontiac Silverdome have not been
successful, and he’s prepared to hand it over to an auctioneer
if it will speed up the sale of the empty landmark. Leeb tells
The Oakland Press that Pontiac will continue negotiating with
potential buyers, but the Detroit suburb also will set up a
worldwide auction. The city spends about $1.5 million annually
to maintain the structure. Pontiac has tried repeatedly to
sell the 80,000-seat domed stadium since the Lions left in
2002 to move to Ford Field in Detroit.

Chiefs sign 7th-rounder TE O’Connell

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with tight end
Jake O’Connell, one of the team’s three seventh-round draft
picks. O’Connell played 41 games at Miami of Ohio, catching
46 passes for 453 yards and four touchdowns, including 25
catches for 258 yards last season. Terms of the deal,
announced Friday, weren’t released. O’Connell, the 237th overall
pick, is the third of Kansas City’s eight draft picks to sign,
joining kicker Ryan Succop and offensive tackle Colin Brown.

Fee for tours at new $1.15 billion Cowboys Stadium

Fans concerned about affording to see a game or a show at the
new $1.15 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington can still check
out the place. For a fee. Tours began Friday at the
retractable-roof venue of the Dallas Cowboys, the same
day as thousands of hopefuls for the Fox TV show “American
Idol” showed up for auditions. Stadium tours, at $15 for
adults and $12 for children, will be conducted every half-
hour and last up to 75 minutes. The tour includes the high-tech
scoreboard control room, the press box, the Cowboys locker room
and limited field access.

Lions sign C Raiola to 4-year contract extension

The Detroit Lions signed center Dominic Raiola to a four-year
contract extension Thursday, putting the 6-foot-1, 295-pound
starter under contract through the 2013 season. “He’s everything
that’s right about the NFL,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.
“He’s a guy that embraces the city he lives in. He lives here
year-round. He is as hard a working guy as you’re going to
imagine.” Raiola is entering his ninth season with the Lions.
He was drafted 50th overall in 2001 and has started at center
since 2002, playing in 124 games with 108 starts. “If you talk
about the great centers, probably in the history of the National
Football League,” Schwartz said, “I think they’d all have in
common: leverage, feet, balance, quickness. Dom has all of
those.” Raiola left Nebraska after his junior season.

Chiefs sign Pro Bowl S Mike Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs added depth to the defensive backfield,
signing former Pro Bowl safety Mike Brown. Terms of the deal
announced Thursday were not disclosed. Brown played nine seasons
with the Chicago Bears, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2005.
He holds team records with seven defensive touchdowns and three
fumble return TDs, and his four interception returns for
touchdowns matches the team record. Brown was a second-round
draft pick out of Nebraska in 2000 and has appeared in 102 games,
including two in the playoffs. He could compete with Jarrad Page
and Bernard Pollard for a starting spot or serve as their primary
backup.ides say they are happy to have the matter resolved.

Steelers owner Rooney now ambassador to Ireland

Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney was confirmed by the Senate
on Thursday as U.S. ambassador to Ireland. The nomination was
approved by voice vote. Rooney was a lifelong Republican who
backed President Barack Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton during
Pennsylvania’s presidential primary last year. He later campaigned
for Obama in western Pennsylvania and helped him win the state in
November. In the 1970s, he helped found the American Ireland
Fund, an organization that has raised millions for advocacy of
peace and education in Ireland. Rooney’s father, Arthur J. Rooney,
founded the Steelers in 1933. The son took over the presidency
of the team in 1975 and is a Hall of Fame owner. His Steelers
won the Super Bowl this year. The “Rooney Rule,” which requires
any team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least
one minority candidate, was developed by an NFL committee
Rooney chaired. Rooney has also participated in labor
negotiations between the league and players.

Jets awarded CB Barksdale off waivers

The New York Jets have been awarded cornerback Rashad Barksdale
off waivers from the New York Giants. Barksdale was a sixth-
round draft pick of Philadelphia in 2007, but was released a
few days before the season opener. He signed with Kansas City
the following day and had nine tackles in six games for the
Chiefs. Barksdale was released after training camp last summer
and signed with the Giants, who waived him last Saturday.

Estefans join Miami Dolphins as minority owners

Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan,
are bringing the Miami Sound Machine to the Miami Dolphins.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross announced at a news conference
Thursday that the Estefans are joining the NFL franchise as
minority owners. Gloria Estefan says she is a “hard core”
sports fan and is happy to be a part of her hometown team.
Last month, Ross also began a partnership with Jimmy Buffett’s
Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager.
Buffett has yet to accept Ross’ invitation to become a minority
owner, but the Dolphins’ stadium has been renamed Land Shark
Stadium for this season.
