Philadelphia Eagles meet with animal rights groups
Animal rights groups and the Philadelphia Eagles are looking
at ways they can join forces to combat dogfighting. The team
drew criticism after hiring convicted dogfighting ringleader
Michael Vick. He wasn’t in attendance at Monday’s meeting.
Tom Hickey of DogPAC says he believes the upshot of the meeting
was that the Eagles have a responsibility to battle dog fighting
because of the Vick hire. Eagles spokeswoman Pamela Browner-
Crawley called the conversation a tough but constructive
beginning. She says the team has an obligation to the community
and work with kids particularly, to discourage them from engaging
in dog fighting or any animal abuse. A second meeting may be
scheduled.
Raiders sign LB Napoleon Harris
The Oakland Raiders brought back linebacker Napoleon Harris
four years after trading him in a deal for Randy Moss and
released cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. The Raiders made the
move Monday after losing linebacker Kirk Morrison to a dislocated
elbow on Saturday. Morrison is expected to miss two weeks and
the Raiders needed more depth at middle linebacker. Harris was
a first-round pick by the Raiders in 2002 before being dealt to
Minnesota in the deal that brought Moss to Oakland in 2005. He
spent two years with the Vikings before going to Kansas City
in 2007. He went back to Minnesota last season and started
five games for the Vikings.

Titans release receiver Chris Davis
The Tennessee Titans have released receiver Chris Davis on Monday,
just four days after he was arrested on a drunken driving charge.
Coach Jeff Fisher said Davis’ injured left hamstring would not
have allowed him to play before roster cutdowns. So the coach
said the team released Davis and lineman Doug Datish. Davis
had been playing well before the injury but had missed the
past two weeks. He was among a handful of Titans left at home
with injuries when arrested early Friday morning.
McCarthy names Packers starting offensive line
Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has picked his starting
offensive line. At least for now. Calling it a “very tough
decision,” McCarthy said Monday that Jason Spitz will start
at center over Scott Wells in Friday’s preseason game at
Arizona. Allen Barbre also will start over Breno Giacomini
at right tackle, where the Packers had to replace longtime
starter Mark Tauscher, an unrestricted free agent coming off
a season-ending knee injury who Green Bay did not re-sign.
“The starting five tonight is the starting five that we’ll
take into Arizona,” McCarthy said after Monday night’s
practice. That means Spitz and Barbre will be joined by
veteran Chad Clifton at left tackle, Daryn Colledge at left
guard and Josh Sitton at right guard. “If they keep
progressing, this is who we’ll line up with,” when the
season begins against Chicago, McCarthy said. If not,
“we’ve got guys that are chomping at the bit that are
ready to go.” Offseason injuries played a major role in
Monday’s decisions. Wells required shoulder surgery while
Giacomini needed ankle surgery. So Spitz, a starter at right
guard for most of his first three NFL seasons, got all the
offseason reps at center and Barbre all the reps at right
tackle. Wells and Spitz shared the No. 1 reps at center during
training camp, and McCarthy said Wells was one of the team’s ”
top three or four linemen” in the preseason. Giacomini shared
the No. 1 reps at practice last week but allowed a second-
half sack that injured No. 2 quarterback Matt Flynn’s
shoulder on Saturday against Buffalo. “I achieved a goal
that I set for myself, one of my many goals,” said Barbre,
a third-year player. “I want to keep working hard and keep
getting better, and you never know. I feel like I’m not
even close to reaching my potential.”

Bengals sign DT Langston Moore
Defensive tackle Langston Moore has signed with the Cincinnati
Bengals, the team that originally drafted him. The Bengals
took him in the sixth round in 2003. He started eight games
the following year, then played for Arizona. He played in 25
games over the last two seasons for Detroit, which let him
leave as a free agent after last season. He has been out of
the NFL since then. Moore will compete for a spot in the
Bengals’ defensive line rotation.
Miami DBs back after tests for flu-like symptoms
Miami Dolphins defensive backs Sean Smith and Jason Allen
are practicing again after being scratched from Saturday’s
exhibition game against Carolina with flu-like symptoms.
The Dolphins said the two had tests, but declined to say
whether the players were tested for swine flu. Smith and
Allen both said after practice Monday evening that they were
feeling fine. They declined further comment. Smith was
replaced at starting cornerback by fellow rookie Vontae
Davis. Allen is a reserve safety.
Washington hurts leg during practice
Tennessee receiver Nate Washington hurt his right leg during
practice Monday and left the field with a team doctor and
trainer. The receiver was running a pass route when he went
down. Trainers tended to him, and Washington was able to walk
off the field to the locker room on his own. Washington was
the Titans’ top free agent pickup this offseason, leaving
Pittsburgh to sign a six-year deal in March. He was signed
to boost a passing offense that ranked just 27th in the NFL
in 2008 for a team that went 13-3.

Chiefs waive linebacker Redd
Linebacker Vince Redd has been waived by the Kansas City
Chiefs. The Chiefs announced the move Monday. Redd had been
claimed off waivers from the New England Patriots on Aug. 4.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound linebacker played in five games for
the Patriots last season.
49ers activate DE Ray McDonald
The San Francisco 49ers have taken defensive end Ray McDonald
off the physically unable to perform list. McDonald was
scheduled to participate in his first training camp practice
later Monday. McDonald hurt his right knee last Oct. 19
against the New York Giants and started only two more games
the rest of the season. He later underwent reconstructive
surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament and missed the
offseason workouts. The 49ers need a boost for their pass
rush. They have only one sack in two exhibition games and
that came when Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell tripped
over teammate Darren McFadden’s foot.
