Bears sign Darrell McClover, drop DeAngelo Smith
The Chicago Bears have signed linebacker Darrell McClover to
a one-year contract and released cornerback DeAngelo Smith.
The terms of McClover’s deal were not disclosed Tuesday. McClover
appeared in 22 games with the Bears from 2006-08 registering 36
special teams tackles and two blocked punts. For his NFL career,
the 2004 seventh-round draft pick of the New York Jets has 61
special teams tackles in 38 games. Smith was inactive for the
Bears last two contests after being claimed off waivers in Week 2.
Report: Freeney could miss 2 to 3 weeks
Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney could miss two to three weeks
with an injured right quadriceps, according to a report on ESPN’s
Web site. The story cited an unnamed league source. Colts
spokesman Craig Kelley said the team would not provide a more
detailed injury report until Wednesday. Freeney’s agent, Gary
Wichard, did not respond to e-mails sent by The Associated
Press. Freeney was injured on the last play of the third
quarter of Sunday’s victory over Arizona. He walked to the
locker room and team president Bill Polian said Monday night
that Freeney said “if he could walk, he could play.” Freeney
has four sacks this season, fourth in the NFL and AFC, and is
a former league sacks champion.

Rams’ David Vobora suspended
The NFL has suspended St. Louis Rams linebacker David Vobora
without pay for the next four games for violating its policy
on performance enhancing substances. The NFL made the announcement
Tuesday and said Vobora’s suspension begins immediately. He can
return to the active roster Oct. 26. Vobora was the last overall
pick of last year’s draft. He became a starter this year.
Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said the news is disappointing, but
the club respects the league’s decision. Vobora has a concussion
that was to be evaluated on Tuesday. A team spokesman said he
didn’t know the outcome.
Titans put Hentrich on IR, bring back Mark Jones
The Tennessee Titans have brought back veteran returner Mark Jones
weeks after releasing him to fix their struggling special teams.
The Titans (0-3) signed Jones this offseason, then cut him Sept. 4.
But using rookies as their returners resulted in two turnovers and
14 points in last weekend’s 24-17 loss to the New York Jets.
They gave Jones a physical Tuesday and signed him back to the roster.
Tennessee placed veteran punter Craig Hentrich on injured reserve.
He strained a calf muscle Sept. 20. Running back Chris Henry was
released from the roster with running back Rodney Ferguson cut
from the practice squad. Tennessee also signed safety
Kevin Kaesviharn and added cornerback Cary Williams to the
practice squad.

Pennington out for season; Dolphins get Thigpen
The Miami Dolphins made it official: Chad Pennington is out
for the season. Pennington was placed on the reserve-injured
list to create a roster spot for quarterback Tyler Thigpen,
acquired Tuesday from the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed
draft pick. Pennington likely face a third operation on his
right shoulder since 2005. He was hurt in a loss Sunday at
San Diego that left Miami at 0-3. Thigpen shores up depth
behind second-year pro Chad Henne, who is expected to make
his first NFL start Sunday against Buffalo. Rookie Pat White
is the Dolphins’ other quarterback. Thigpen, a third-year pro,
started 11 games for the woeful Chiefs last year and threw for
2,608 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
NFL, union have ‘positive’ negotiating session
NFL officials and the NFL Players Association can at least agree
on one thing: Tuesday’s bargaining session went well. The two
sides hope to negotiate a new labor deal after the NFL opted
out of the collective bargaining agreement last year. The
contract won’t expire until after the 2010 season. NFLPA
executive director DeMaurice Smith believes owners opted
out because they want to lock out players in 2011. NFL
commissioner Roger Goodell contends the owners want to play.
The NFLPA released a statement calling Tuesday’s meeting “good.”
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello called it “positive” and said the
league looked forward to more constructive discussions in the
future. The NFLPA says another meeting is expected in the
coming weeks.

Vikings bring Jon Cooper up from practice squad
The Minnesota Vikings have swapped backup centers again, waiving
Kory Lichtensteiger and signing Jon Cooper from the practice squad.
Cooper made the final cut out of training camp, but was waived
the next day when Lichtensteiger was signed after being dropped
by the Denver Broncos. The undrafted rookie Cooper was then
placed on the practice squad. John Sullivan is set as the
starter. Reserve lineman Ryan Cook can also fill in at center.
Also, the Vikings signed offensive tackle Patrick Brown and
wide receiver Vinny Perretta to the practice squad. Wide
receiver Nick Moore was released from the eight-person squad.
Saints place offensive lineman Jammal Brown on IR
The New Orleans Saints have placed former Pro Bowl left tackle
Jammal Brown on injured reserve because of his hip injury,
ending his season. Brown had been sidelined since early in the
preseason, first by a sports hernia and later by a left hip
injury that required surgery. The 6-foot-6, 313-pound lineman was
a first-round draft choice in 2005 and was selected to the Pro
Bowl following the 2006 and 2008 seasons. The move opens the
possibility that Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief, both of whom
have played in Brown’s absence, will play key roles in
protecting quarterback Drew Brees’ blind side. Also Tuesday,
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team re-signed
Nick Leckey, who can play center or guard.
