Former San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl punter Tom Wittum, who
was drafted by the Chicago White Sox but opted for a standout
baseball and football career at Northern Illinois, has died.
He was 60.

Wittum died of cancer Friday at his home in the northern
Chicago suburb of Antioch, his son, Matt Wittum, said Tuesday.
A fifth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 1968, Wittum
instead chose to attend Northern Illinois. He set 10 school
kicking records as a place kicker and punter, including the
career, single-season and single-game records for punts,
punting yards and punting average. Equally skilled as a
third baseman, Wittum helped lead Northern Illinois to a
24-8 record in 1972 – the first year the Huskies were
invited to the NCAA baseball tournament.

Wittum was drafted by the 49ers in 1972. The two-time Pro Bowler
played in 70 games with San Francisco from 1973-77, kicking
380 punts for 15,494 yards with a 40.8-yard gross average,
according to the team. He retired from the NFL after a
serious car accident left him with several broken bones
in 1978, but went on to teach driver’s education and coach
for more than 30 years, most of it at Grayslake High School
in Grayslake, Ill.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, four children, four
grandchildren, and two sisters. The 49ers said in a statement
posted on the team Web site that it was deeply saddened by
news of Wittum’s death. Matt Wittum said a memorial service
was held Tuesday at The Chapel in Grayslake.

Vikings CB Griffin needs major knee surgery

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin will have surgery
to repair an injured left knee and might not be ready for the
start of next season. Griffin was hurt covering the overtime
kickoff in Minnesota’s loss at New Orleans in the NFC
championship game. Coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that
Griffin will have surgery within the next week, once some
of the strength and range of motion returns in his knee.
Griffin led the Vikings with four interceptions this season
and helped stabilize the secondary while fellow starting
cornerback Antoine Winfield missed nearly two months with a
broken right foot. Childress didn’t offer specific details
of the injury, but said Griffin faces a recovery time of
six to nine months. That puts his availability for training
camp and the early part of next season in doubt.
“Everybody heals a little bit differently, so he’ll be right
on the edge I’m sure,” Childress said. Another defensive
starter, middle linebacker E.J. Henderson, is uncertain for
next season as well. Henderson badly broke his left thigh
bone on Dec. 6, and he’s still on crutches.

Falcons hire Tim Lewis to coach defensive backs

The Atlanta Falcons, looking for an improved pass defense,
have hired Tim Lewis as the team’s secondary coach. Lewis
coached the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive backs this season
and is a former defensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh
Steelers and the New York Giants. He was Carolina’s secondary
coach in 2007-08. Lewis replaces Emmitt Thomas, who was not
retained after the Falcons ranked 28th in pass defense.
Lewis’ hire, first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
was confirmed by the team on Tuesday. The former Pittsburgh
star played four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Amid Tebow furor, CBS invites more advocacy ads

CBS is reacting to a furor over a planned Super Bowl ad
featuring college football star Tim Tebow. The network says
it has eased its restrictions on advocacy ads and would
consider any that are “responsibly produced” for the few
open spots remaining for the Feb. 7 broadcast. CBS says it
has received both critical and supportive e-mails since
women’s groups began a protest campaign Monday against the
ad. Those critics say the ad will use Tebow to convey an
anti-abortion message. The ad is funded by the conservative
Christian group Focus on the Family. It is expected to
recount the story of Pam Tebow’s pregnancy in 1987. After
getting sick, she ignored doctors’ recommendation to abort
her fifth child and gave birth to Tim, a Heisman Trophy
winner.

NFL considering use of echocardiograms to detect heart problems

The NFL’s medical committee is discussing giving players
echocardiograms in the wake of Chicago Bears defensive end
Gaines Adams’ death this month. Adams died Jan. 17 of an
enlarged heart, something an echocardiogram can detect. NFL
teams already give extensive physicals to players. Stress
testing and echocardiograms are conducted when the results
of the physical, an EKG and family history indicate the need.
NFL medical people and outside experts who sit on the league’s
cardiovascular health committee previously have discussed
making echocardiograms standard. They’re doing so again,
pending the final pathologists’ report on Adams. But some
cardiologists warn there could be risks, such as misdiagnoses,
to making echocardiograms standard in a physical exam.

Brad Childress says he won’t give Brett Favre a deadline

Vikings coach Brad Childress spent some time with Brett Favre
in the training room early Tuesday morning before Favre hopped
a flight home to Mississippi. They didn’t talk about Favre’s
future, but the biggest question of the Vikings’ offseason
lingers: Was Tuesday his final day at Winter Park? “I don’t
have an expectation,” Childress said. “I know he had a great
experience here. I know it too well to know that emotions are
a little bit raw right now. We’re still too close to it. He’s
earned his time to be able to step away from it and talk to
his family and figure out what he wants to do. But I don’t
have a strong expectation one way or the other. It would not
surprise me one way or the other.” Childress said he wouldn’t
give Favre a deadline for deciding whether he will return for
his 20th NFL season or retire. Favre had tears in his eyes
Sunday after the Vikings season ended in a 31-28 overtime
loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC title game.

Favre took a considerable pounding in the game, suffering an
injured ankle among other bruises. He said he needed time to
decompress mentally and emotionally before contemplating his
next move. Favre, who statistically had one of his best
seasons, is scheduled to earn $13 million next season.
Childress said the team essentially will proceed this
offseason with two game plans: one with Favre, one without
him. “You can plan both ways,” Childress said. “I don’t know.
It’s up to him. But it’s not a deal where I need to put a
gun to his head and say, ’I need to know in a week, two weeks,
two months.’ I know you guys want it all in concrete and set
in stone.”

Favre said Sunday that it wouldn’t take him months to decide,
but his teammates didn’t seem too concerned if it did. All-Pro
defensive tackle Kevin Williams said it wouldn’t bother him
if Favre skipped the Mankato portion of training camp and
reported later, as he did last summer. “You want to make sure
you make a decision that is not an emotional decision and
that (it is) an informed decision,” Childress said.
Regardless of Favre’s decision, Childress agreed that the
team must develop a long-term answer at the position. The
Vikings need to identify their quarterback of the future,
and Childress hinted they might look to select one in the
first round of the draft this spring. “Eventually you would
like to be able to do that,” Childress said. “But by the
same token, you don’t want a round peg in a square hole.
I am too far away from it right now to tell you what the
quarterback class this year looks like. I know we’re picking
down there at 30th (in the first round). We’ll just see what’s
there and I’m sure that we will ably man that position one
way or the other.”

It took a few extra minutes, but the lineup for the
divisional round of the NFL playoffs is set. The Arizona
Cardinals beat the Green Bay Packers 51-45 in overtime Sunday
on Karlos Dansby’s 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown to
round out the field. “He (Michael Adams) made a sack, the ball
went in the air, I just made a play on the ball,” Dansby said.
Earlier, the Baltimore Ravens routed the Patriots 33-14.
Arizona (11-6) will face the NFC’s top seed, the Saints (13-3),
in New Orleans on Saturday. The reward for Baltimore (10-7) is
playing the AFC’s top seed, taking on the Colts (14-2) later
Saturday in Indianapolis. The Ravens’ win at New England sends
the Jets to San Diego. A Cowboys-Vikings matchup in Minnesota
already was set after Dallas won a playoff game for the first
time since 1996 on Saturday night. The Jets, Ravens and Cowboys
all made statements this weekend that they’re in top form. The
Cardinals seemed poised to do the same when they raced out to
a 17-0 first-quarter lead. But the Packers (11-6) scored three
fourth-quarter touchdowns to send the game to overtime. “That’s
probably one of the best games ever played in the playoffs,”
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. The Ravens went ahead
for good on the very first play from scrimmage, Ray Rice’s
83-yard touchdown run, and led 24-0 after one quarter.
Baltimore forced Tom Brady into three turnovers on the first
four possessions for the Patriots (10-7). The Ravens face the
AFC South champion Colts in a rematch of their meeting in
Baltimore on Nov. 22. Indy won 17-15 in a game in which its
defense held the Ravens to a field goal after it had first-
and-goal at the 1 in the fourth quarter. “We’ll play our
game against the Colts; it’ll be our will against their
will,” Rice said. “It’ll be a fourth-quarter game. The Xs
and Os will take care of themselves. Playoff football is a
little different from regular season. In the regular season,
those plays are not being made.” The Cowboys’ 34-14 rout of
Philadelphia sent them to the Metrodome for a meeting with
Brett Favre and the Vikings (12-4) next Sunday. The fifth-
seeded Jets played error-free ball in frigid Cincinnati to
beat the AFC North champion Bengals 24-14 on Saturday
afternoon. With their stingy defense and versatile running
game, the Jets (10-7) look as formidable as coach Rex Ryan
has claimed they are. Their next test comes Sunday against
the AFC West champion Chargers (13-3).

No deal yet for Seahawks with Carroll

The Seattle Seahawks are in Los Angeles trying to make Pete
Carroll their next coach – while lining up interviews to find
their next general manager. Seahawks chief executive officer
Tod Leiweke spent Sunday in California. A team spokesman says
his talks with the charismatic coach of Southern California may
go into Monday. The Seahawks still do not have an agreement
despite widespread reports, but are closing in on a deal for
Carroll’s return to the NFL, according to a league official
with direct knowledge of Seattle’s coaching search. The
official requested anonymity because the team isn’t detailing
the search. ESPN reported that former Tennessee Titans GM
Floyd Reese will interview for Seattle’s GM job. He will join
New York Giants personnel man Marc Ross, Green Bay executive
John Schneider and Omar Khan, a contract administrator with
Pittsburgh.

TV ratings up for first day of NFL playoffs

The first day of the NFL playoffs drew the best preliminary
television ratings in a decade. The Cowboys’ 34-14 win over
the Eagles on NBC on Saturday night earned a 19.6 overnight
rating and 32 share, the highest for a first-round game since
the 1999 season. The Jets’ 24-14 win over the Bengals drew a
16.9/31, the best for the early game in 10 years. The average
for the two games was up 12 percent from last season.
Ratings represent the percentage of all households with
televisions tuned into a program, and shares represent the
percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time. Overnight
ratings measure the nation’s largest markets.

AP source: Heckert leaving Eagles for Browns

Tom Heckert is leaving the Eagles’ nest. Philadelphia’s
general manager has agreed to become the Cleveland Browns’
new GM, a person familiar with the hiring told The Associated
Press on Sunday. The person, who spoke on the condition of
anonymity because the details of Heckert’s contract have not
been finalized, said the 42-year-old could join the team as
early as Monday. The Browns recently hired Mike Holmgren as
their president and now have found a replacement for GM George
Kokinis, fired by the club in November. Cleveland’s front office
is being reorganized under Holmgren, who interviewed Heckert
last week in between meetings with coach Eric Mangini. Holmgren
announced Thursday he was bringing Mangini back for a second
season. Heckert has been with the Eagles since 2002, serving
as the club’s GM since 2006. He began in Philadelphia’s pro
personnel department and during his time with the club, the
Eagles won four NFC East titles and went to one Super Bowl.
Heckert was in the final year of his contract in Philadelphia.
It’s not known how much final authority Heckert will have over
Cleveland’s roster, draft and free-agency moves. In Philadelphia,
he had to defer those decisions to coach Andy Reid. Heckert
was considered for Cleveland’s GM job last winter, but he
withdrew his name after Mangini was hired. Heckert has ties
to the Browns. His father, Tom Sr., worked as a scout for
the team in the 1980s. Holmgren also interviewed Will Lewis,
Seattle’s director of pro personnel, for the GM opening.
Lewis worked with Holmgren in Green Bay and Seattle. Lewis
was a minority candidate, so his interview fulfilled the
Browns’ obligation to comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule.
It’s possible Lewis could wind up in Cleveland. The Seahawks
are undergoing a massive overhaul following coach Jim Mora’s
firing on Friday and are in negotiations with Southern
California coach Pete Carroll.

Titans’ C. Johnson sets record for scrimmage yards

Chris Johnson set the NFL record for yards from scrimmage in
a season on Sunday, the first of two league milestones he
reached in the Tennessee Titans’ season finale. The second-year
running back caught a pass in the flat for a 9-yard gain in the
second quarter Sunday at Seattle to break Marshall Faulk’s
record of 2,429 scrimmage yards set in 1999. Titans coach
Jeff Fisher got the ball from a game official and tossed
it to a team staffer. In the fourth quarter, Johnson became
the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in
a season.

Schaub to stay in Houston, get bonus

-The Houston Texans will exercise an option in Matt Schaub’s
contract that will give the quarterback a $10 million bonus
and extend his contract for the next three years. Schaub signed
a six-year contract when he was traded from the Atlanta Falcons
three seasons ago and the Texans had until March to decide if they
wanted to exercise the option to keep him in Houston. Owner
Bob McNair said the team plans to do that and the decision
“wasn’t difficult at all.” “He’s really been one of the best
quarterbacks in the league this year,” McNair said. “We could
see how good he was and he just needed the opportunity and this
year we were able to protect him better and keep him on the
field and he put the numbers up there.” Schaub led the league
in yards passing with a franchise-best 4,770 in helping Houston
(9-7) to its first winning record with a victory over New
England on Sunday. His 4,770 yards are the sixth-most in
NFL history. The Texans were eliminated from the playoffs late
Sunday night with the New York Jets’ win over Cincinnati.
It was the first time Schaub had started every game since
arriving in Houston after missing five games in each of his
first two seasons with injuries. Though the decision on Schaub’s
contract didn’t have to be made until March, McNair said they
decided to give it to him the first time it was discussed.
“It was a no-brainer, there’s no way that we’re not going to
keep Matt,” McNair said. “He’s our quarterback and the team
has confidence in him. He’s shown great courage and you’ve
seen when he’s gotten injured, he’s gone back out there and
led his team. So he’s really won the respect of his teammates
and that’s what you need.” Schaub was 24 of 39 for 303 yards
and two touchdowns against the Patriots for his ninth 300-yard
passing game of the season, tied for second most in league
history.

Redskins fire coach Jim Zorn after 4-12 season

Jim Zorn was fired by the Washington Redskins early Monday,
the first step in yet another team overhaul under owner Dan
Snyder. Zorn was informed of his dismissal shortly after the
team returned to Redskins Park following Sunday’s season-ending
23-20 loss at San Diego. Zorn went 12-20 over two seasons, but
he lost 18 of his last 24 games after a 6-2 start in 2008. The
Redskins struggled early despite a weak schedule this season
and finished 4-12, their worst record since 1994. “The status
quo is not acceptable,” general manager Bruce Allen said in a
statement released by the team. “I felt it was necessary to
not waste a moment of time to begin building this team into
a winner.” Zorn’s replacement will be Washington’s seventh
coach since Snyder bought the team in 1999. Playing a role
in the decision will be Allen, who was hired as the GM last
month. Zorn’s dismissal had been expected for months. The front
office stripped him of his play-calling duties in late October,
and Snyder has interviewed assistant coach Jerry Gray for the
job weeks ago, according to the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which
monitors minority hiring in the NFL. Former Denver Broncos
coach Mike Shanahan is considered the favorite to replace
Zorn. The new coach, Snyder and Allen will have a monumental
task to rebuild a team with many roster deficiencies and major
questions at offensive line, quarterback and running back.
This year’s team has been hurt by numerous injuries, a lack
of depth and many off-the-field distractions, but also by an
inability of Zorn’s West Coast offense to consistently find
the end zone. The Redskins failed to score more than 17
points in their first eight games, prompting the front office
to bring longtime NFL assistant coach Sherm Lewis out of
retirement as an offensive consultant and play-caller.
Zorn, who had never previously been a head coach or coordinator
in the NFL, wasn’t even on Snyder’s list of candidates when
Joe Gibbs retired at the end of the 2007 season. Zorn become
a last-minute option when other contenders either showed no
interest, dropped out or were deemed unsatisfactory. Snyder
initially hired Zorn to be the offensive coordinator, then
promoted him to head coach two weeks later after an extensive
interview.

The Dallas area will host its first Super Bowl when Super
Bowl XLV will be played at new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington
on Feb. 6, 2011. Overall, this will be the third Super Bowl
held in the state of Texas, as Houston hosted Super Bowl VIII
at Rice Stadium in 1974 and Super Bowl XXXVIII at Reliant
Stadium in 2004. With a capacity expandable to 110,000, new
Cowboys Stadium will be the largest to host a Super Bowl
since the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. hosted 98,374 fans
for Super Bowl XXVII. In addition to hosting Super Bowl XLV,
Cowboys Stadium will host the 2009 and 2010 Big 12
championship games, the Cotton Bowl, the 2010 NBA All-Star
Game and the 2014 men’s Final Four.

the top five on NFL.com. Balloting for the 2010 Pro Bowl

Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and
coaches will cast their votes on December 22-23.
The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting
by fans, coaches and players to determine its all-star
teams. It was the first professional sports league to
offer online all-star voting in 1995.

NFL Charities awards $1.5 million in sports medical research
grants

NFL Charities, the charitable foundation of the National
Football League, has awarded $1.5 million in grants to
support sports-related medical research at 11 organizations,
the NFL announced Tuesday. The NFL has long supported
sports-related medical research through NFL Charities
Medical Research Grants. Since 2000, NFL Charities has
committed more than $20 million in grants to medical
facilities nationwide to address issues including studies
on mild traumatic brain injury, ACL injury prevention and
heat stress risks. Overall, the NFL has spent more than
$5 million to research concussions and other brain injuries
during the past decade, including the NFL Charities grants
in this area. A four-member panel of medical experts
evaluates and recommends grantees each year that must be
approved by the NFL Charities board. This year’s grants
include studies on knee biomechanics, artery blockage in
retired players and stem cell usage for tendon repair.
“NFL Charities Medical Research Grants strive to make
the game of football and all athletics safer by supporting
a broad range of the best sports-related medical research
proposals,” said Vanderbilt University Head Team Physician
Dr. Kurt Spindler, who is the chairman of the NFL Medical
Grant Committee. “The goal is to look at some of the many
risk factors that exist not only for football players,
but in all athletics.” This year’s NFL Charities grants
include a $124,000 grant to the University of South Florida
towards a study on heat stress risks. “This grant from
NFL Charities means more than just another funded research
project to us. It means we are one step closer to being
able to protect youth, collegiate and professional
athletes who participate in sports in the heat,” added
Dr. Eric Coris, Associate Professor, Director of Primary
Care Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida.
NFL Charities granted $80,000 to Washington University
School of Medicine in St. Louis for a study on ACL injuries.
“The award from NFL Charities this year is especially
meaningful as it helps to further the work of the MARS
(Multi-center ACL Revision Study) group, which is an 87
surgeon multicenter trial,” said Dr. Rick Wright, Principal
Investigator at the Washington University School of Medicine
in St. Louis. “The work we are doing would have struggled
to continue without this support.” Formed in 1973,
NFL Charities is a nonprofit organization that enables
the league to contribute collectively to charitable
causes on a national level. NFL Charities, which has
approved more than $120 million in grants to more than
600 different organizations, approves grants annually to
support sports-related medical research, youth health
programs, and the charitable work of current and retired
NFL players.

No tampering violation found in Haynesworth signing

The NFL determined it “cannot conclude” that the Washington
Redskins committed a tampering violation before signing
defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth last offseason.
The league also said Tuesday the Redskins “assured” the
NFL that the team will “re-emphasize with club executives
the importance of abiding by the anti-tampering policy
and ensure compliance with those rules.” Violation of those
rules can result in fines and forfeiting draft picks.
The league said it conducted “an extensive review” of the
Haynesworth case. His former team, the Tennessee Titans,
sent information to the NFL indicating the Redskins might
have contacted Haynesworth and his agent, Chad Speck,
before free agency began Feb. 27. Haynesworth signed a
seven-year, $100 million contract with Washington, with
$41 million in guaranteed money. Spokesmen Robbie Bohren
of the Titans and Zack Bolno of the Redskins declined to
comment on the NFL’s ruling Tuesday.

Struggling Steelers will be without Kemoeatu,
Polamalu vs. Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers left guard Chris Kemoeatu will sit out
Sunday’s game against Green Bay with right wrist and right
knee injuries. Coach Mike Tomlin says Kemoeatu has been
“playing one-handed” at times because of the wrist injury
and that he needs a week off to heal. Kemoeatu will be
replaced by undrafted rookie Ramon Foster. Steelers safety
Troy Polamalu will miss a fifth consecutive game with a
sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,
an injury that has been slower to heal than the team
expected. Polamalu hopes to play in the Steelers’
regular season finale Jan. 3 in Miami, but he could
miss the rest of the season.

Cardinals WR Fitzgerald to have MRI exam on right knee

Arizona star receiver Larry Fitzgerald left the Cardinals
game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night briefly
in the second half with a sprained right knee. Fitzgerald was
hurt on the third play of the third quarter when he tried to
catch a deep pass from Kurt Warner. Dashon Goldson landed on
Fitzgerald’s leg and he was helped off the field. The
training staff tended to Fitzgerald on the sideline before
he was taken to the locker room. He returned to the field
with 3:23 remaining in the quarter but did not catch another
pass as the Cardinals lost 24-9. Fitzgerald finished the game
with two catches for 22 yards — his worst performance in two
seasons. Fitzgerald is scheduled to have an MRI on his knee
Tuesday. He did not talk after the game. “When he hurt his
knee, we thought that there was a big scare, it might be
something long-term,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “But
obviously it was encouraging to see him come back. We’ll
get him checked out.” Fitzgerald has 85 catches for 991
yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

-Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware could play Saturday
night despite sustaining a neck injury from a scary collision.
“He’s actually a lot better today,” coach Wade Phillips said
Monday. “He’s really in a day-to-day situation as far as where
he’s going to be as far as being able to play. … He took
quite a hit, but has really bounced back strong. That’s
encouraging for him and us.” Phillips described the injury
as a neck strain. Ware spent several hours in the hospital
Sunday after he was hurt in the fourth quarter of a 20-17
loss to the San Diego Chargers. Phillips said the linebacker
went home that night. Backup safety and special teams player
Pat Watkins sprained his left knee on a kickoff return Sunday
and will be out at least two weeks. Philips also said tight
end Martellus Bennett has not been cleared to play after
experiencing concussion-like symptoms that kept him out
Sunday. Bennett will not play Saturday night at undefeated
New Orleans. The Cowboys are 8-5 and have dropped a game behind
Philadelphia in the NFC East. Ware was hurt while pursing
quarterback Philip Rivers. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker
got around another offensive lineman and then went headfirst
into the upper leg of lineman Brandyn Dombrowki. Ware remained
on the ground for several anxious minutes, then was immobilized
and strapped to a stretcher before being taken off the field.
In October, Ware agreed to a $78 million, six-year contract
extension through the 2015 season that included a $20 million
signing bonus. The 27-year-old was in the final year of the
contract he signed after being selected with the 11th overall
pick in the 2005 draft.

Eagles’ Jackson ties NFL record for long TDs

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson tied an NFL
record for touchdowns of 50 yards or more in a season when he
scored his seventh and eighth of the season in a game against
the New York Giants on Sunday night. Jackson scored on a
72-yard punt return in the second quarter and caught a
60-yard touchdown pass in the third to tie the mark shared
by Elroy Hirsch and Devin Hester.

Belichick says he has a lot of respect for Moss

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is defending Randy Moss against
comments that the wide receiver doesn’t go all out on the field.
Belichick said Monday he has a lot of respect for Moss and
dismissed the criticism as coming from two players who had
just lost another game. Panthers defensive backs Chris
Gamble and Chris Harris made the remarks after New England’s
20-10 win Sunday that dropped Carolina to 5-8. The Patriots
are 8-5. Moss was held to one catch for 16 yards and lost
a fumble on that play. He also appeared not to break hard
for a pass that was intercepted by Gamble. But Belichick
said Moss is one of the Patriots best and most consistent
players.

Dallas-Washington to remain Sunday night game

The Dallas-Washington matchup Dec. 27 will remain the NFL’s
Sunday night game even though NBC had the option to choose
another one. The league said Monday that the Denver-Philadelphia
game that day will start at 4:15 p.m. EST instead of 1 p.m.
The league’s flexible scheduling policy allows it to change
the Sunday night game to select a better matchup starting in
Week 11. The game could have major playoff implications for
the Cowboys, who are 8-5 before playing at the undefeated
Saints on Saturday. The Redskins are 4-9.

Brees made the announcement via Twitter on Saturday. It was
later confirmed by the Krewe Bacchus, known for its celebrity
kings. The Bacchus parade is set to roll Feb. 14, two days
before Mardi Gras and one week after the Super Bowl. With
the Saints 12-0 heading into Sunday’s game with the Atlanta
Falcons, New Orleans fans have high hopes their team will
make it to the championship game.

Falcons DT Babineaux says he’s not guilty of felony drug charge

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux insists
that he will be cleared of a felony marijuana charge, saying
in a statement that he and his family “have faith that you will
see I’m not guilty.” Babineaux was arrested during a traffic
stop Thursday night and charged with possession of 1½ ounces
of marijuana. Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. David
Schiralli has said that Babineaux and another man, Aaron
Robinson, were driving in the player’s 2005 Cadillac Escalade
when police pulled them over. Falcons coach Mike Smith said
he doesn’t expect the arrest to be a distraction for Sunday’s
game against the New Orleans Saints and declined to say if
Babineaux would play. Babineaux is listed as questionable
because of a shoulder injury that limited him in practice
Thursday and Friday.

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux has been
arrested and charged with marijuana possession. Gwinnett

during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 in suburban Atlanta
around 10:45 p.m. Thursday. Schiralli says the 28-year-old
Babineaux had nearly 1 1/2 ounces of marijuana and is
charged with possession of marijuana with intent to
distribute. Intent to distribute charges can be brought
any time someone has more than an ounce. Babineaux also faces
charges for having expired registration and driving without a
license. He was released from the Gwinnett County jail
Friday morning on $8,300 bond. A spokesman for the Falcons
did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Concussion symptoms KO Bennett

-Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett missed a second straight
practice Thursday because of concussion-related symptoms.
Bennett did not report any problems during the loss against
the Giants, but he’s since complained of headaches, fogginess
and that “his eyes were hurting,” coach Wade Phillips said.
Bennett has seen a specialist and continues to be monitored.
In his second season, Bennett is sixth on the team with 15
catches for 159 yards. Dallas uses two tight ends on most
plays. If he misses the game, rookie John Phillips likely
would handle most of Bennett’s usual workload.

Hasselbeck returns to practice for Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck is back practicing with the Seahawks – and
tired of talking about his health. The 34-year-old three-
time Pro Bowl quarterback practiced Thursday, after taking
another Wednesday off to rest a sore throwing shoulder. He
will start Sunday at Houston. The shoulder that had been
paining him got worse last weekend on a tackle at the end
of a scramble against San Francisco. Hasselbeck has missed
2 1/2 games this season with broken ribs. He missed nine
games last year with a bad back. He says he understands
his health is an issue because he is a quarterback, but
he wishes everyone would stop talking about it. He calls
it “really annoying.” He says this is not his most painful
season. That was 2001, his first as Seattle’s starter.

Jets place LB Izzo on IR, sign 2 to practice squad

The New York Jets placed linebacker and special-teams ace
Larry Izzo on injured reserve Thursday with a herniated disk
in his neck. Coach Rex Ryan said Izzo thought he was getting
stingers, but it turned out to be more severe. Ryan said Izzo
saw a spine specialist and had several tests done to determine
the nature of the injury. It was unclear when the injury
initially occurred, but Izzo had played in every game this
season. “He would get his strength up enough to where he
thought he could play,” Ryan said. “I don’t know exactly
when, and I’m not sure he knows.” Special teams coordinator
Mike Westhoff said the pain would shoot from Izzo’s neck down
his right arm, and was hindering his play. Ryan said Izzo
would likely need surgery if he plans to keep playing, and
indicated his career could be over. “It was tough to see,”
defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. “He kept saying, ‘
This isn’t the way I wanted it to end.’ You could just tell
that with his warrior mentality, he wanted to go out fighting.”
Izzo, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets in the offseason,
was tied with Eric Smith for the team lead with 18 special-
teams tackles. He has 275 special-teams tackles in 200 games
with New York, New England and Miami in 14 NFL seasons, and
made the Pro Bowl three times. The Jets also signed linebacker
Josh Mauga and center Michael Parenton to the practice squad.
Both spent time with the Jets during training camp before being
among the team’s final cuts. New York lost defensive tackle
Antonio Garay earlier Thursday when San Diego signed him off
the Jets’ practice squad.

Raiders OL Robert Gallery done for season

-Oakland Raiders left guard Robert Gallery will miss the
rest of the season with a lower back injury. Gallery injured
himself in last week’s game at Pittsburgh. Coach Tom Cable
said Thursday that Gallery will need a “repair” done and won’t
return this season. The injury is not career-threatening.
Gallery missed six games earlier this season with a broken
bone in his leg. Chris Morris is expected to take Gallery’s
spot in the lineup this week against Washington.

Harvin misses another practice with migraines

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin has missed practice
again because of migraine headaches. Coach Brad Childress
confirmed Thursday that Harvin has been held out this week
because of the condition. Harvin visited a doctor for the
problem, which he has dealt with since college. It first popped
up this year in Week 3, forcing him to miss two practices. But
Harvin played against San Francisco that Sunday and had his
first kickoff return for a touchdown. The Vikings have 13
players, including 12 starters, listed on this week’s injury
report with the Bengals coming to town Sunday. Running back
Adrian Peterson (foot/ankle) and right tackle Phil Loadholt
(shoulder) participated in part of practice Thursday after
being held out Wednesday. Safety Tyrell Johnson missed
practice again because of a concussion.

Henderson suffers broken leg

Minnesota linebacker E.J. Henderson broke his leg against
the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in a brutal injury that will
apparently sideline him for the season while dealing a serious
blow to the Vikings’ defensive unit. Henderson fractured his
femur while trying to tackle Tim Hightower late in the fourth
quarter – his leg twisting violently as he went down. He was
taken off the field on a motorized cart after doctors spent
several minutes attending to the star linebacker. His brother
and teammate, Erin, held Henderson’s hand as they were driven
to the locker room. Coach Brad Childress said Henderson will
spend the night in Phoenix and undergo surgery. Henderson has
been a key part of Minnesota’s defensive success this season,
and it was the second straight year that his season was cut
short with injury. The mood in the locker room around the
Henderson injury was somber as many players just shook their
heads in disgust at the horrific injury. “I feel bad for E.J.,”
Vikings quarterback Brett Favre said. “That’s awful for him
and for our team.”

Favre breaks record with 283rd consecutive game

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre set an NFL record
by playing in his 283rd consecutive game Sunday night. With
his first snap against Arizona, the 40-year-old Favre broke
the record of 282 held by longtime Vikings defensive end Jim
Marshall. Favre has not missed a game since the 1992 season.

Andy Reid says he loves coaching the Philadelphia Eagles but
won’t discuss reports that he’s close to completing a long-term
contract extension. Team officials also declined comment on
reports that an announcement could come early this week. But
they have said all along they’re eager to lock up an extension
for Reid, who’s in his 11th season with the Eagles. Reid says
he can “think of no better organization” than the Eagles. He
has a career record of 105-66-1 after Sunday’s 34-7 win over
the Atlanta Falcons.

L.T. passes Faulk in career yards, Jim Brown next

San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson passed Marshall
Faulk for ninth place on the NFL’s career rushing list in the
third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Browns. Tomlinson
took an inside handoff and ran for 3 yards, giving him 12,282
yards, three more than Faulk (12,279). Tomlinson entered the
game needing 56 yards to pass Browns Hall of Fame running back
Jim Brown (12,312) for eighth place on the list. Also,
Tomlinson’s next touchdown will be the 150th of his career.
He’s trying to reach the milestone faster than any player in
league history. Tomlinson was playing in his 137th career game.
Emmitt Smith scored his 150th TD in his 160th game.

NFL to cut smaller revenue sharing

The NFL has told the players’ union it will cut a $100 million
annual supplemental revenue-sharing program that subsidizes
lower-revenue teams. That plan, which is a small portion of
the $6.5 billion shared in full by all 32 teams, will be cut
because the 2010 season will not have a salary cap. “We are
simply going forward on the terms the union approved in March
of 2006,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. Those terms pertain
to only years with salary caps, the league says. The NFL
Players Association will challenge the league’s move this
week, a person familiar with the union’s plans told The
Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke anonymously
because the NFLPA has not officially announced its intentions.
ESPN originally reported the story. Union officials believe
the owners can’t terminate the program without the union’s
approval. The NFLPA also is concerned that some teams will
not spend competitively because there is no minimum for
spending under a non-salary cap system. “The union is just
trying to make noise to get some attention,” Aiello said.
“The CBA has special rules to protect competitive balance
in the uncapped year. There will still be billions in equally
shared revenue in 2010.” But the NFLPA worries about any
cuts in any revenue-sharing. “Revenue sharing helps maintain
the ‘any given Sunday’ dynamic in the NFL,” NFLPA assistant
executive director George Atallah told the AP in an e-mail.
“The amount of money some owners propose to pull out of the
system in 2011 could mean the difference between playoffs
and blackouts for many teams.” The program the league plans
to terminate involves the top 15 revenue teams placing funds
into a pool from which many of the lower income clubs can
draw. It does not include television monies or box office
revenues. Nine franchises qualified to receive funds this
year, although the league has not identified them.
NFL owners have opted out of the collective bargaining
agreement, which will end after next season unless a new
contract is reached.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez sustained a mild right knee
sprain early in the third quarter and didn’t return in New
York’s 19-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
Coach Rex Ryan was optimistic about the injury, but said
Sanchez would likely undergo an MRI for precautionary
measures. Ryan also added it’s uncertain whether Sanchez
will be able to play at Tampa Bay on Dec. 13. Sanchez
appeared to be hurt when he dived head first to end an
8-yard run on New York’s second possession of the second
half. He stayed in the game for two more plays before being
replaced by Kellen Clemens.”It started to hurt shortly after
that play,” Sanchez said. “It just didn’t feel right when I
got back to the huddle. I put some weight on it to bend down
under center and it just didn’t feel right when I tried to
hand it off and get it to (David) Clowney on the end-around.”
Sanchez was examined by trainers for several minutes on the
sideline before he made his way with a slight limp to the
locker room. Sanchez was nursing a sore left knee this week
after he was hurt in a 17-6 win over Carolina last weekend.
He was 7 of 15 for 104 yards and a touchdown pass against
Buffalo. “I’m optimistic,” Sanchez said. “I’ll do anything
I can to play next week.” The Bills lost starting right
tackle Kirk Chambers in the first half because of an ankle
injury, and starting linebacker Chris Draft didn’t finish
because of a shoulder injury.

Coach says Arizona QB may be game-time decision

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt says the decision on who will
start at quarterback for the Cardinals on Sunday night against
Minnesota could well be a game-time decision. Kurt Warner and
Matt Leinart split practice time with the starters again on
Thursday, and Whisenhunt said he has made no decision. Warner,
who sustained a concussion against St. Louis on Nov. 22, took
all the practice time with the starters last week but sat out
Sunday’s 20-17 loss at Tennessee because of lingering symptoms.
That left Leinart the starter without much preparation.
Warner says he feels much better this week but Whisenhunt is
putting off his decision in case there are any late setbacks.

Freeney returns to Colts practice

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney returned to practice Thursday
and cornerback Kelvin Hayden worked out for the second straight
day, meaning both could play Sunday against Tennessee. Freeney
missed last week’s game with an abdominal injury. Hayden has
missed four straight games with a knee injury. Indy had 23
players on its practice report, and seven missed both practice
days. Two players out were receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who
hasn’t played since the season-opener, and kicker Adam Vinatieri,
who has missed the last six games. Other key players who sat
out both days include running back Donald Brown (chest),
defensive tackle Keyunta Dawson (knee) and left tackle Charlie
Johnson (foot).

Vikings’ Peterson gets 109 mph speeding ticket

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was cited for
speeding over the weekend after police clocked him driving
109 mph on a highway in suburban Minneapolis. Edina
(ee-DYE’-nuh) police spokeswoman Molly Anderson says
Peterson was pulled over just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Peterson was driving his BMW on a state highway in a 55-mph
zone. Anderson says he was given a citation and allowed to
drive away. She called it a “very routine” traffic stop.
Peterson tells The Associated Press he didn’t realize how
fast he was going. He said he “got a little speeding ticket”
and said he planned to be more careful. The stop happened
the night before Peterson ran for 85 yards and a touchdown
in a 36-10 victory over Chicago. He also fumbled twice.

The Chicago Bears have signed linebacker Cato June to a
one-year contract. The deal was announced Tuesday. Terms
were not disclosed. June, a sixth-round draft pick by
Indianapolis in 2003, has 490 tackles and 12 interceptions
in 88 career games, including 73 starts in six seasons with
the Colts and Tampa Bay. The 2005 Pro Bowl selection has
appeared in eight playoff games with seven starts, including
all four at weakside linebacker during the Colts’ run to the
Super Bowl title after the 2006 season. June spent part of the
2009 preseason with the Houston Texans before being placed on
the reserve/injured list on August 28. The Bears also
terminated the practice squad contract of defensive end
Joe Clermond Tuesday.

49ers lose Taylor for season with hip injury

Rookie safety Curtis Taylor’s season is over for the San
Francisco 49ers. The team placed Taylor on injured reserve
Tuesday with a strained hip, which he injured after being hit
on punt coverage late in the first quarter of Sunday’s 20-3
win over Jacksonville. San Francisco promoted fullback Brit
Miller from the practice squad to fill the roster spot.
Taylor, a seventh-round draft pick out of Louisiana State, had
one tackle in seven games and made eight stops on special teams.
The 49ers also signed receiver Rodney Wright to the practice
squad.

Colts waive 2 defensive players before Titans game

The Indianapolis Colts have waived defensive end Josh Thomas
and defensive back Anthony Madison. Both were waived Tuesday
after signing with the Colts to add depth to a defense hit
by several injuries. Thomas rejoined the team last week
when Indy wasn’t sure if four-time Pro Bowl defensive end
Dwight Freeney could play with an abdominal injury at
Houston. Freeney sat out, and Thomas went into the
defensive line rotation. The move with Madison could indicate
that the Colts will get cornerback Kelvin Hayden back this
week. Madison was signed Nov. 11 after Hayden went down with
a sprained knee. The team has not said which knee Hayden
injured.

Roethlisberger expected to play against Raiders

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has worked out without
problems since missing Sunday night’s game in Baltimore with
a concussion and is expected to play Sunday against Oakland.
Roethlisberger was held out of the 20-17 overtime loss to the
Ravens after having post-practice headaches Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. A team doctor recommended Saturday that
the quarterback not play, and coach Mike Tomlin agreed. While
the Steelers did not practice on Monday, Roethlisberger worked
out on his own and did not have any problems, Tomlin said.
“All indications are he’ll be a full participant tomorrow
(Wednesday) in practice and ultimately play in the game on
Sunday,” Tomlin said Tuesday. If the headaches should
unexpectedly return, Tomlin said the Steelers will “act
quickly.” The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback
sustained his fourth concussion since 2006 and his second
in less than a year during an overtime loss in Kansas City
on Nov. 22. Neither Roethlisberger nor the team revealed
during the week he was having headaches, one reason there
was considerable surprise when it was announced he wouldn’t
play. “There are codes that come with playing tough games
like football that kind of conflict at times, with things
that are of utmost importance like head injuries,” Tomlin
said. “I understand the gravity of the decision that we
had to make on Saturday, the potential of that. “I understand
that if we allowed Ben to play that we’d be open to questions
in regards to that. I thought that if we didn’t allow Ben to
play, that we’d be open to questions in regards to that.
Really, it was irrelevant in terms of my decision making.
I was more concerned about doing what was right. Medical
experts suggested he not play, so we didn’t play him.”
Roethlisberger played the week after sustaining a concussion
against Atlanta in 2006, but had one of the worst games of
his career. He threw four interceptions – two for touchdowns –
during a 20-13 loss to Oakland, which won only one other game
all season.

Chiefs to retire Derrick Thomas’ number

The late Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas will be the
10th player in Kansas City Chiefs history to have his number
retired. The Chiefs will retire No. 58 on Sunday during
halftime of their game with the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead
Stadium. Thomas had completed his 11th NFL season when he died
in February 2000 following a crash a month earlier. The nine-
time Pro Bowl selection had a franchise-record 126 1/2 career
sacks, including an NFL-record seven sacks in one game.
Thomas was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
August. Representatives of the Hall will make a special

Atlanta lost offensive stars Matt Ryan and Michael Turner to
injuries Sunday, and the Falcons wouldn’t say how serious
they are. Ryan, the second-year quarterback, hurt his big
right toe on Atlanta’s first series in a 20-17 victory over
Tampa Bay. Turner reinjured his right ankle during the third
quarter, a high sprain that had kept the running back out of
the previous game and limited him in practice. Offensive
linemen Harvey Dahl and Sam Baker also left the game with
injuries. Ryan apparently hurt his toe on the ninth snap of
the game, a sack by Stylez White and Tim Crowder. The toe was
taped up, extra padding was added to his shoe and Ryan did
some light jogging on the sideline to test it out. Eagles wide
receiver DeSean Jackson suffered a concussion in Philadelphia’s
27-24 win over Washington. Jackson left the game after he was
hit on a catch late in the third quarter. Jackson has developed
into Philadelphia’s No. 1 wide receiver this season with 44
catches for 769 yards and six touchdowns. He caught a 35-yard
TD on Sunday. Eagles coach Andy Reid said Jackson did not
lose consciousness and would need further evaluation. Tight
end Brent Celek sprained his thumb. The Eagles said X-rays
were negative. Celek told a teammate he has torn ligaments
in one of his hands after dropping three passes. Jets rookie
quarterback Mark Sanchez left New York’s 17-6 win over the
Carolina Panthers for four plays against the Carolina Panthers
with a left knee injury. After the game, Sanchez said he was
totally fine. Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman left San
Diego’s 43-14 win over the Chiefs with a foot injury in the
second quarter and did not return.

Eli Manning has stress reaction in foot

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has developed a stress reaction
in his right foot that could eventually lead to further
injuries which might sideline him indefinitely. A person familiar
with Manning’s injury told The Associated Press about the latest
problem Sunday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity
because the team has not officially confirmed the problem.
Manning has suffered from plantar fasciitis – an injury to the
band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot
and inserts into the heel – since hurting the foot against Kansas
City on Oct. 4. The stress reaction is not an unexpected
development, but the team wants to prevent a stress fracture
that could end Manning’s year. An aggressive treatment program
has included bone stimulation and having Manning wear special
shoes offering his foot more support. He has limped at times
during games, but has denied his passing accuracy has been
affected. The Giants were 4-0 after their win at Kansas City,
but now are 6-5 and Manning has struggled in recent weeks,
even though the plantar fasciitis has healed. The stress reaction
was first reported by ESPN.com.

Eagles TE Celek sprains thumb

Eagles tight end Brent Celek sprained his thumb in Philadelphia’s
27-24 win over Washington on Sunday. The Eagles said X-rays were
negative. Celek told a teammate he has torn ligaments in one of
his hands after dropping three passes. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin
stopped a passing Celek at his locker and asked, “you good?”
Celek told him, “No, I tore a few ligaments in my hand.” Celek
extended his left hand toward Maclin to take a look. Celek has
developed into a top tight end and leads the Eagles with 54
receptions. He has 601 yards receiving and five touchdowns.
Celek caught four passes for 33 yards against the Redskins. Coach
Andy Reid did not mention Celek’s injury in his postgame press
conference.

Eagles WR Jackson suffers concussion vs. Redskins

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson has suffered a concussion
against Washington, the second offensive starter to get a serious
head injury against the Redskins this season. Jackson left the
game after he was hit on a catch late in the third quarter. The
Eagles originally said Jackson suffered head and neck injuries.
Jackson has developed into Philadelphia’s No. 1 wide receiver
this season with 44 catches for 769 yards and six touchdowns.
He caught a 35-yard TD in Philadelphia’s 27-24 win on Sunday.
Eagles coach Andy Reid says Jackson did not lose consciousness
and would need further evaluation. The Eagles played without
running back Brian Westbrook after he suffered a concussion
Oct. 26 at Washington.

Browns DL Shaun Rogers hurts leg

Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers suffered a leg injury
when a teammate was blocked into him in the closing minutes
of a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
Rogers lay on his back for several minutes after the pileup.
He was taken off the field on a cart, with teammates coming
over to offer encouragement. Rogers also was involved in the
game’s most notable play. His horse-collar tackle on Bengals
quarterback Carson Palmer with no time left in the first half
resulted in a penalty and an extra play. Cincinnati kicked a
field goal for a 13-0 halftime lead.

Vick braced for Atlanta return

Michael Vick is ready to make his football return to Atlanta.
Vick will play his first game in Atlanta since 2006 when the
Philadelphia Eagles visit Sunday. Vick says he’s prepared for
the scrutiny that will come this week when he faces his former
team for the first time. “I look forward to every week. This
week isn’t going to be any different,” Vick said. “It’s going
to be good to go back to Atlanta. We still have a game to win.”
Vick was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback during his six
seasons with the Falcons. He served 18 months in federal
prison for running a dogfighting ring. Vick said he no longer
had any ties to Atlanta. Vick has had limited playing time
in his first season with the Eagles. He has 15 carries for
65 yards and is 3 for 9 for 6 yards passing. He nearly
scored his first TD since 2006 in Sunday’s 27-24 win over
the Redskins, running 4 yards to the 1. “I’m prepared to
play whenever my number is called,” Vick said. Vick smiled
when asked about the kind of reaction he expected from Falcons
fans. “I’m going to get a great reaction from the crowd.
It’s going to be a standing ovation,” he said, smiling.
“It’s still my city.”
