Broncos place WR Russell on reserve-injured list
The Denver Broncos placed wide receiver Clifford Russell on
injured reserve Tuesday and signed free-agent wide receiver
Glenn Martinez. Russell sprained his neck on kickoff coverage
in the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ 33-19 loss at Kansas City
on Sunday. Russell, a sixth-year pro who had signed with the
Broncos on Sept. 17, saw a neurosurgeon on Monday but no details
were released. Martinez is a third-year pro who played for the
Broncos last season but was waived on Aug. 30. He appeared in
12 games with one start last year. He had 14 receptions for
175 yards, 15 kickoff returns for 330 yards and 14 punt
returns for 157 yards and a touchdown.
Bills sign FB McIntyre, release Barnes
The Buffalo Bills shuffled fullbacks Tuesday by signing Corey
McIntyre and releasing Darian Barnes. McIntyre, an unsigned free
agent with three years of NFL experience, spent last season with
Atlanta before his September release. He also played with
Cleveland and New Orleans, and is regarded as a capable blocker
and special teams player. The moves come as the undefeated
Bills (4-0) prepare to play at Arizona (2-2) on Sunday, Buffalo’s
final game before its bye week. Barnes’ release comes after he
sprained his right foot in Buffalo’s 24-23 win over Oakland on
Sept. 21 and missed last weekend’s game at St. Louis.
The lone fullback on the Bills’ roster, Barnes is a seven-year
NFL veteran who was in his first season with Buffalo. He had
two catches for 34 yards this season and was used as a lead
blocker for running backs Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson.
The Bills have reintroduced the fullback position in their
offense this season under first-year coordinator Turk Schonert.

Mandarich admits steroid use in TV interview
Former NFL draft bust Tony Mandarich says he used steroids at
Michigan State and faked a drug test before the 1988 Rose Bowl.
He also said during an interview on “Inside the NFL” that will
air Wednesday on Showtime that he did not use steroids in the
NFL but was addicted to alcohol and painkillers. Mandarich,
whose autobiography will be released in March, said he provided
a fake urine sample to evade detection before the ‘88 Rose Bowl
in which Michigan State beat Southern California 20-17. Mandarich
said he couldn’t confirm a report that other players did the same.
The offensive lineman was the No. 2 overall pick in 1989 by the
Packers. He lasted just three years with Green Bay amid rumors
of steroid use. “I got to the point where it was a struggle to
work out three or four times a week because the priority of
getting high was above the priority of working out,” Mandarich
said in the interview.
Bengals sign ex-Bears RB Cedric Benson
Running back Cedric Benson signed Tuesday with the Cincinnati
Bengals, who needed another runner and were undeterred by two
alcohol-related arrests in Texas that prompted the Chicago
Bears to let him go. Benson will take the spot of running back
DeDe Dorsey, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after
hurting his hamstring in a 20-12 loss to Cleveland. Chris Perry
is Cincinnati’s starting running back. Benson was Chicago’s
first-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Texas. He started
12 games for the Bears from 2005-07, running for 1,593 yards
and 10 touchdowns. He missed five games with an ankle injury
last season, but had a career-high 674 yards. Benson was
arrested in May on charges of boating while intoxicated and
resisting arrest, and again in June on a drunken driving charge
in Austin, Texas. Two grand juries in Travis County, Texas,
declined to indict Benson on the charges last week, ending
the cases.

Kearse’s hearing postponed until Jan. 6
A preliminary hearing on a drunken-driving charge for Tennessee
defensive end Jevon Kearse has been continued until Jan. 6.
The hearing had been scheduled for Tuesday, but Kearse’s attorney
Roger May said neither he nor the district attorney general’s
office had seen video of the June 22 arrest. Kearse was
arrested by Vanderbilt University police and charged with
driving under the influence and refusing a breath test.
The district attorney general’s office has a procedure for
requesting videos from Metro Nashville police but not with
Vanderbilt’s police. Kearse was stopped around 4:42 a.m. that
day by police who noticed a sport-utility vehicle weave across
a road.
Falcons LT Baker out after concussion tests
Atlanta Falcons left tackle Sam Baker was on the inactive list
for Sunday’s game against Carolina after undergoing concussion
tests this week. Todd Weiner replaced Baker in the starting
lineup and was to be matched up with Panthers defensive end
Julius Peppers. Baker has been forced to leave the last two
games and was listed on the injury report as having an illness.
Receiver Laurent Robinson (knee) also did not dress for Atlanta.
For Carolina, kick returner Ryne Robinson (knee) was inactive
for a fourth straight game despite returning to practice last
week. Left guard Travelle Wharton was in the starting lineup
after missing two games with a sprained right knee. Panthers
receiver Dwayne Jarrett, a second-round pick last year, was a
healthy scratch for a second straight week.
