Buccaneers’ Joseph injures foot

Tampa Bay offensive lineman Davin Joseph injured his foot
during Sunday night’s preseason victory over New England and
could be out for the Buccaneers’ season opener. The Tampa
Tribune and St. Petersburg Times reported the third-year
guard, the Bucs’ first-round draft pick two seasons ago,
underwent surgery for a broken foot. However, there was no
confirmation from coach Jon Gruden or the team on nature or
severity of the injury. “Davin Joseph has hurt his foot. He’s
getting X-rays and examinations and all those things at this
point in time, but I don’t have anything concrete in terms of
what the injury is,” Gruden said after practice Tuesday.
Joseph has started 28 of 29 games at right guard since entering
the league as the 23rd player selected in the 2006 draft. He
missed the first three games of his rookie year after a knee
injury. Rookie Jeremy Zuttah moves into Joseph’s spot on a young
offensive line that’s expected to be one of Tampa Bay’s strengths
this season. Meanwhile, wide receiver Joey Galloway practiced for
the first time this summer. He missed all of training camp with
a sore groin. “He’s a work in progress. He’s getting better,”
Gruden said. “He’s not a 100 percent, and therefore it’s hard
to play. But he is back in a limited capacity.” Quarterback
Jeff Garcia, sidelined most of training camp by a right calf
strain, also practiced. Gruden said it’s too early to predict
if he’ll make his preseason debut this weekend against
Jacksonville. “We’ll make that decision in the next few days,
once we see him for a couple days,” Gruden said. “We’ll talk
to him and see how he looks.”

Full practice for Polamalu

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu participated in a full
practice for the first time this preseason on Tuesday. Polamalu,
who has been selected to the past four Pro Bowls, was placed on
the physically unable to perform list on the first day of training
camp. He had injured his hamstring before arriving and has only
worked out lightly on his own. “I like the fact that they’re
taking it slow because a hamstring is the kind of thing that
you definitely don’t want to have linger throughout the season,”
Polamalu said. Polamalu made it through practice at the team’s
facility Tuesday “looking pretty good,” coach Mike Tomlin said.
Later, neither Polamalu nor Tomlin would commit to his playing
Saturday against Minnesota. “We’re being cautious about how we
get him back out there,” Tomlin said. “We can’t take steps
backward as we proceed. We’re very conscious of that.”

Berrian limited by sore toe

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian has a sore
toe on his right foot that has limited him in practice for
the past week. The injury kept him out of Saturday’s exhibition
game at Baltimore. After Tuesday’s practice, Berrian said his
condition is “a day to day thing” and that he’s not sure whether
he’ll play Saturday against Pittsburgh. “We’re trying to wait
and see and make sure everything’s right before we get to the
season,” said Berrian, who signed a six-year contract with $16
million guaranteed to be Minnesota’s top receiver after four
years with Chicago. For a player paid to stretch the defense
down the field and catch long passes, an injury that affects
running ability is certainly a concern. Though Berrian appeared
in all 16 games for the Bears, he had the same problem last
season. “Hopefully, if I get enough rest before it really gets
as serious as it did last year, then I’ll be good by the season,”
Berrian said. Coach Brad Childress downplayed the situation.
“It’s tender, so he’s mixing the treatment with the football and
doing what he can do. But that’s a number of our guys, trying to
work through,” Childress said.

Falcons release veteran receiver Horn, will pay remaining salary

Joe Horn, released by the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday after the
team couldn’t trade the veteran receiver, said he is relieved he
can pursue a job with another team. The Falcons will receive no
return on the guaranteed $2.5 million salary in 2008 for the 36-
year-old Horn. Horn said he wished he could have produced better
numbers for team owner Arthur Blank. “It’s a sense of sadness
because after every game last year and after the first two
preseason games I had to look at Mr. Blank and know that he
deserves a winning team and he deserves a championship,” Horn
told The Associated Press. “I was here and couldn’t make it
happen. It’s kind of sad for me leaving.” Horn was a disappointment
in 2007, when he caught only 27 passes for 243 yards and one
touchdown after signing a four-year, $14.5 million deal. Horn sat
out voluntary workouts, did not play in the team’s first two
preseason games because of a hamstring injury and asked to be
traded. “I’m 100 percent ready to run,” Horn said Tuesday when
asked about the injury. Horn’s agent, Ralph Vitolo, said Dallas,
Jacksonville, Seattle and Tennessee could have a need for
a veteran receiver. “Now we’re calling these teams and kind
of narrowing the scope,” Vitolo told The Associated Press.
“Joe has been so productive. Somebody like Joe and a team
with a need should be a perfect fit.”

Manning on schedule for return

Peyton Manning appears to be on schedule in his recovery from
surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee,
but there is at least some question as to whether he’ll be
back in time for Indianapolis’ regular-season opener against
the Chicago Bears. “I think it’ll be close for Peyton,” owner
Jim Irsay told the Indianapolis Star when asked if Manning would
be ready for Week 1. “Only he will know if he’s ready. I think
there’s a good chance he will be. … With the human body, you
just don’t know for sure. But we’re hopeful he’ll be ready to go.”
Manning underwent the procedure more than a month ago and has
missed all of training camp. The veteran did attend his first
practice Tuesday, but did not take part in any team activities.
The Associated Press reports that Manning did not appear to have
any problems walking on the injured knee. What’s more, coach
Tony Dungy said Manning may begin practicing next week.
Manning has long been one of the most durable and productive
quarterbacks in fantasy football. He’s never missed a start at
the NFL level and has thrown for better than 4,000 yards in
eight of his past nine seasons. The two-time NFL MVP has also
averaged 36.5 total touchdowns since 2004, including seven
rushing scores over the past two seasons.

Bengals sign Henry months after releasing troubled wide receiver

With their two Pro Bowl receivers hurt, the Cincinnati Bengals
brought back troubled receiver Chris Henry on Tuesday, a move
that their coach had emphatically ruled out only a month earlier
as inappropriate. The signing helps the team but raises questions
about its commitment to holding players accountable for their
actions. Henry must serve a four-game suspension from the NFL –
his third such punishment — before he can fully rejoin the team.
The move was stunning in light of Lewis’ statement shortly before
training camp opened that the team had permanently parted ways
with the receiver, who has been arrested five times since he
joined the Bengals. Henry had indicated he was interested in
rejoining Cincinnati. “I’m not interested,” Lewis said at the
team’s annual preseason luncheon on July 22. “I don’t think it
would be productive for our football team. You have to be a
productive part to be an NFL player, and there’s responsibilities
to being an NFL player. It’s a privilege, it’s not a right.
There’s a lot that comes with being an NFL football player.”
The Bengals evidently feel differently after Pro Bowl receiver
Chad Johnson sprained his left shoulder during a 27-10 preseason
loss to Detroit on Sunday night. Johnson is expected to miss the
rest of the preseason due to the injury. Pro Bowl receiver T.J.
Houshmandzadeh has missed both preseason games with a hamstring
injury as well. The Bengals released Henry after he was accused
of punching a college student and breaking his car window with a
beer bottle in March. Bengals president Mike Brown also cut ties
with Henry, saying he could no longer be with the team.
“His conduct can no longer be tolerated,” Brown said at the
time. “The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to
support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped
to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal
responsibility that this community would support and that
would allow him to play in the NFL. … But those efforts end
today, as we move on with what is best for our team.”
The Bengals had no immediate comment on their decision to
re-sign Henry, who was expected to practice with the team
on Tuesday evening.

Patriots cut veteran tight end Marcus Pollard

The New England Patriots released 13-year veteran tight end
Marcus Pollard on Tuesday. They also signed rookie tight end
Tyson DeVree, who joins Benjamin Watson, David Thomas and
Stephen Spach at that position. Pollard signed with the
Patriots on April 23 after being released by Seattle, where
he spent one season. He played his first 10 seasons with
Indianapolis and two with Detroit. “It wasn’t really going to
work out here the way that we had hoped and he had hoped,”
coach Bill Belichick said. “At the same time, there are still
a couple preseason games left and time before the season opener
and I think there are some other teams that are looking for
tight ends and maybe there is a better opportunity for him
somewhere else.” In 191 games, including 133 starts, Pollard
caught 349 passes for 4,280 yards and 40 touchdowns. Last
season, he had 28 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns
in 14 games. DeVree originally signed with the Patriots on
May 5 as a rookie free agent and was released on June 11.
He played two seasons at Western Michigan and two at Colorado.

Titans cut second punter

The Tennessee Titans waived punter Josh Miller on Tuesday and
replaced him on the roster by signing defensive back Tuff Harris.
Miller took part in Tuesday morning’s special teams session
before being released. Miller signed with the Titans on April
25 and spent all but the final two practices of training camp
with the team. He was their second punter on the roster,
helping veteran punter Craig Hentrich. The 38-year-old punter
joined the Titans as a chance to work out for other teams. He
was with New England last year but was cut so late he couldn’t
catch on with another team for the season. Harris was an
undrafted free agent in 2007 out of Montana, who had signed
with the Miami Dolphins.
