Goodman reaches five-year deal with Broncos
Cornerback Andre Goodman reached an agreement on a five-year
deal Sunday night with the Denver Broncos, a team that’s been
busy retooling their secondary through free agency. Goodman,
who helped the Miami Dolphins turn around their season last
year, is the third defensive back the Broncos have lured to
Denver since free agency began late last week. The team also
added veteran safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill, who’s
played with Goodman in Miami for the last three seasons.
Goodman’s deal is worth up to $25.2 million, with more than
$10 million of it guaranteed. The Broncos have made defense a
high priority this offseason after ranking at or near the bottom
in every major defensive category last year, when they surrendered
448 points. Goodman, 30, replaces Dre’ Bly, who was released
last month when the Broncos’ new braintrust of coach Josh
McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders jettisoned five
defensive starters and cleared $37 million in cap room.
Goodman will team up with star cornerback Champ Bailey in Denver.
“Andre’s very happy about the whole situation,” his agent, Jason
Chayut, said. “Look at that secondary, it’s tremendous. He’s
really excited.” Goodman started 16 games with the Dolphins last
season, leading the team with five interceptions and 19 pass
breakups.
Clayton re-signs with Bucs
Michael Clayton signed a five-year contract worth nearly $26
million on Sunday to remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Clayton, the 2004 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year who has
struggled since that strong debut, agreed to the contract two
days after becoming an unrestricted free agent. As a rookie,
Clayton, a first-round draft pick from LSU (15th overall) had
80 catches for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns – the fifth-best
first season in league history. But Clayton’s production fell
off after that and he lost his starting job at times. He did
start nine games last season after Joey Galloway was injured.
In the last four years, he’s been plagued by injuries and
inconsistency, and his best year was 2008, when he had 38
receptions for 484 yards and one touchdown. Clayton did play
well in the season finale, though, with two catches for 87
yards, one a 58-yard TD – his only score of the season.
The 26-year-old, who has scored just two touchdowns since his
rookie season, has 205 career catches for 2,706 yards and
nine TDs. The deal means the Bucs, who are rebuilding under
new coach Raheem Morris, will return both starting receivers
from last season. Last week, the team placed the franchise tag
on Antonio Bryant, assuring him a one-year contract worth $9.88
million.

Texans nab QB Orlovsky
Dan Orlovsky didn’t want to be Detroit’s backup quarterback.
Now he’s the backup for the Houston Texans. Orlovsky, who said
he wanted to compete for a starting job rather than be a backup
to Daunte Culpepper, signed Sunday to play behind Matt Schaub.
The Texans needed a backup after trading Sage Rosenfels to the
Vikings for a fourth-round draft pick Friday. Orlovsky said a
big reason he chose Houston was to have an opportunity to work
with coach Gary Kubiak, a former quarterback. “I feel comfortable,”
he said. “I feel that coach Kubiak is a coach that can push me
and I’m excited to learn under him and under Matt and just get
better.” Orlovsky appeared in 10 games with seven starts for
the 0-16 Lions last season. He finished with eight touchdowns
and eight interceptions, with 1,616 yards passing. It was the
first significant action of the 25-year-old’s career after he
appeared in just two games in his first three seasons.
He made headlines of sorts when he handed Minnesota two points
in a 12-10 Vikings victory by obliviously running out of the back
of the end zone when he was rolling out to pass. Orlovsky said
he has no ill feelings toward the Lions, but that it was time to
move on after the decision was made that he wouldn’t start.
“I was disappointed,” he said. “It was a confusing situation to
be a part of because I didn’t think the play on Sundays was
warranting that call or that decision.” Orlovsky hasn’t given
up on starting in the NFL again, but knows his role now is to
simply be prepared if needed. “I’m still only 25, so I know I
have a long career ahead of me and my biggest thing was to try
and become as good of a quarterback as I can,” he said. “And I
think that this situation presents that.”
Giants stock up on defensive linemen
The New York Giants gave new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan
some reinforcements along the line, signing free agents Rocky
Bernard and Chris Canty on Sunday. Bernard signed what is
believed to be a four-year, $16 million deal on Saturday night,
hours after the Giants signed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker
Michael Boley. Canty received $42 million over six years, according
to a person familiar with the contract who requested anonymity
because no terms were officially announced. “He’s a veteran
defensive tackle with skins on the wall,” Giants general manager
Jerry Reese said. “He plays hard, he’s stout against the run and
he has to be accounted for as a pass rusher.” Fred Robbins and
Barry Cofield, the starting tackles last season, both have had
arthroscopic surgery in the offseason. “I’m really, really
excited to be coming to the Giants,” Bernard said. “I wanted to
go to a team that has had a lot of success and has a really good
defense. That’s what the Giants have. It feels good to be part
of a great organization. They’re a good football team.”
Bernard started 55 of 103 regular-season games with Seattle in
his seven-year career. He had 282 tackles, 29 sacks and seven
fumble recoveries. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound Canty comes to New
York from NFC East rival Dallas. In 2008, he started every game
at defensive end for the Cowboys and finished with 37 tackles,
three sacks and five passes batted down. He has played both end
and tackle in his career. Terms of his deal were not released.
The Giants were ranked fifth overall in defense last season under
Steve Spagnuolo, who left to become coach of the Rams. Sheridan
was promoted from linebackers coach to replace him.

Jets, FB Richardson agree to terms on 1-year deal
The New York Jets and fullback Tony Richardson have agreed to
terms on a one-year deal, with $500,000 guaranteed. New coach
Rex Ryan said he wanted the Jets to have an all-weather offense,
and bringing back the bulldozing 14-year veteran will certainly
help. Richardson, 37, paved the way for Thomas Jones to lead
the AFC in rushing last season. The three-time Pro Bowl selection
helped Priest Holmes to three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in
Kansas City from 2001-03, and Larry Johnson in 2005. He did it
again the following season in Minnesota with Chester Taylor, and
was instrumental in Adrian Peterson becoming a star with 1,341
yards as a rookie in 2007. Richardson is also in his second
two-year term as a member of the NFL Players Association’s
executive committee, the group in charge of finding a replacement
for the late Gene Upshaw as the union’s executive director.
The Jets have been active since the NFL’s free-agent signing
period began at 12:10 a.m. Friday. They’ve signed former
Baltimore linebacker Bart Scott, traded for cornerback Lito
Sheppard and re-signed Richardson and right guard Brandon Moore.
AP source: DT Cole agrees to deal with Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks and free agent defensive tackle Colin
Cole have agreed to a five-year, $21.4 million contract that
includes $6 million in guaranteed money, a person with direct
knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The person, who requested anonymity because the deal has not
yet been announced, said Cole visited the Seahawks on Friday –
the first day of NFL free agency – and the two sides agreed to
terms shortly afterward. NFL.com reported the deal earlier Sunday.
Cole, 28, played the last five seasons for the Green Bay Packers,
making eight starts and earning significant playing time in Green
Bay’s defensive tackle rotation. His departure is a setback for
the Packers, who struggled on defense last season but could point
to Cole as one of their most consistent players. Cole is
represented by Neil Cornrich of NC Sports, who also represents
Packers offensive tackle Mark Tauscher. Tauscher, who is
recovering from a season-ending knee injury in December,
also is a free agent and is expected to be pursued by the
Packers.

Giants sign former Seattle DT Rocky Bernard
The New York Giants gave new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan
a little more depth, signing former Seattle Seahawks defensive
tackle Rocky Bernard as a free agent. Bernard signed what is
believed to be a four-year $16 million Saturday night, hours
after the Giants signed former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Michael
Boley. “He’s a veteran defensive tackle with skins on the wall,”
Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. “He plays hard, he’s

said. “I wanted to go to a team that has had a lot of success and
has a really good defense. That’s what the Giants have. It feels
good to be part of a great organization. They’re a good football
team.” Bernard, entering his eighth season, started 55 of 103

tackles, 29 sacks and seven fumble recoveries. The Giants were
ranked fifth overall in defense last season under Steve Spagnuolo.
