Ravens vs. Texans moved to Monday night because of Hurricane Ike

The Houston Texans’ game against the Baltimore Ravens was moved
to Monday night at 8:30 p.m. ET because of Hurricane Ike.
The game will be broadcast on CBS stations in Houston, Baltimore
and Washington as well as several smaller secondary markets.
The Ravens are scheduled to fly to Texas on Sunday afternoon.
“We understand completely why the change had to be made,” Ravens
coach John Harbaugh said. “We’ll adjust our schedules.”
This isn’t the first time a game time has been changed because
of an impending hurricane. In 2004, a game in Miami between the
Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers was moved from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
to allow Hurricane Jeanne to pass through the area. Ravens
offensive coordinator Cam Cameron worked for the Chargers in
2003 when California wildfires caused a game against the Miami
Dolphins to be moved to Monday night at Arizona State’s Sun Devil
Stadium. “We all have an understanding that it’s a blessing to
coach or play in an NFL game,” he said. “Just tell us when the
game is and where to play it and we’ll play it.” Texans tight
end Owen Daniels said the hurricane isn’t a distraction and is
a bit intrigued at the prospect of going through one. He has a
degree in atmospheric and oceanic sciences and hopes to be a
television weatherman one day. “I would say (I’m) more fascinated
and interested to know what it’s actually like or what it looks
like or what it feels like than scared by what is going to happen,”
he said. “I think if we were out closer to the gulf I would be
a little more scared.” The Texans moved their scheduled
Friday practice to Thursday night to allow players to have
Friday off to take care of their homes and families.
The game was originally scheduled for 4:15 p.m. ET Sunday.
Hurricane Ike was headed toward the Texas coast as a category
3 storm on Thursday. It was expected to make landfall between
Houston and Corpus Christi sometime early Saturday morning.

Titans’ Haynesworth sits again after concussion

All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth missed a second
straight practice because of a mild concussion as the Tennessee
Titans stay cautious with him. Coach Jeff Fisher said Thursday
that Haynesworth is doing better. “When you have the mild
concussion symptoms, you have to not put him in any situations
where he’d be involved in any collisions for a few days, so
we’re waiting. But he’s been conditioning inside, and he should
be fine,” Fisher said. The Titans visit Cincinnati on Sunday.
“Obviously, he’s a very important part of our defense, and
we’re hoping we have him available for Sunday,” Fisher said.
Haynesworth sat out Thursday along with Vince Young (knee,
hamstring), defensive end Jacob Ford (chest) and running back
Quinton Ganther (hamstring). Linebacker David Thornton did not
take part in the padded portion of practice.

Receiver Ted Ginn Jr. still Dolphins starter

While other receivers might be working with the first-team
offense, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Ted Ginn Jr. remains
his starter. Ginn, the Dolphins’ first-round pick in the 2007
draft, caught two passes for 17 yards and carried the ball
once, gaining two yards in last Sunday’s 20-14 loss to the
Jets. Derek Hagan, who was unseated by three-year veteran
Greg Camarillo for his starting flanker role last week,
worked with the starters in Ginn’s place during Wednesday’s
practice. But Sparano insinuated the coaches are merely
experimenting. “Every day we go out there on the practice
field, every game that we play it’s a tryout,” Sparano said.
“We’re still trying to find the right pieces to the puzzle as
we get onto the games. We need to see consistency come out of
some of these guys, and they know they need to be consistent.”
Sparano said the depth chart shuffling has more to do with
the coaches trying to establish roles for each wideouts. But
he did acknowledge there’s only a “little separation” between
Ginn, Hagan, Camarillo, rookie Davone Bess, and Ernest Wilford,
the top five receivers. Wilford was inactive for last Sunday’s
game, but Sparano said he’s identified a few special teams
roles for the free-agent addition that might allow the unit’s
most experienced receiver to be active for Sunday’s game
against the Cardinals (1-0). “We’re going to play these guys
and we’re going to see who can play, and who is going to bring
what to the table,” Sparano said. Offensive coordinator Dan
Henning said the receivers have been working so hard this
week three needed intravenous fluids at the end of Wednesday’s
practice.

NBC ahead, nearly sold out on Super Bowl ads

NBC has sold nearly all of its commercial time during next
year’s Super Bowl, beating expectations despite a soft advertising
market. The network said Thursday it has sold 85 percent of
its available slots. Strong categories include automobiles and
movies. A dozen 30-second commercials sold for $3 million apiece.
With only about 10 slots left, NBC could command even more money
for each. Normally, about 60 percent of Super Bowl ad slots
get sold by this time of year, when the professional football
season’s final bout is still more than four months away. The
Wall Street Journal reported on the development earlier on its
Web site. Sporting events have been a rare bright spot for media
companies facing declining ad revenue this year in the weak
economy. Although television ratings have been dropping for
years as audiences turn to video recorders and alternative
viewing platforms such as computers and Apple Inc.’s iPods,
people tend to want to watch big sporting events live and on
high-quality screens. Viewership for NBC, a unit of General
Electric Co., was better than expected during the Olympics Games
and exceeded the minimums NBC guaranteed advertisers, allowing
the network to free up time slots it had reserved to make up
for any shortfalls. NBC said it sold $25 million in ads during
the Games, on top of more than $1 billion sold beforehand.

Jets sign veteran TE Baker to contract extension

The New York Jets have signed tight end Chris Baker to a
contract extension, a team spokesman confirmed Wednesday
night. The deal, first reported by NFL Network’s Adam Schefter,
was completed last weekend and could keep the seven-year veteran
with the Jets through the 2012 season. The team wouldn’t divulge
contract details, but it is reportedly for another three years
on Baker’s current deal. Baker, in the third year of a four-year
contract worth $6.6 million, had a career-high 41 catches last
season. The NFL Network reported that the deal will pay Baker
$12.2 million over the three new years, which could include $9
million guaranteed if he plays in half the team’s offensive
plays this season. Baker could also become a free agent if
New York decides against paying the guaranteed money. The
28-year-old Baker ripped the organization and demanded a
trade during the summer, saying the Jets refused to renegotiate
his contract after claiming that they told his former agent
they would look into it. He missed a portion of minicamp after
hurting his back during a practice, and was reportedly fined by
the team for missing an injury treatment session. He tempered
his scathing remarks during training camp, saying his current
agent and the team were in contract talks. He had two catches
for 34 yards in the season opener at Miami, and has 126
receptions for 1,345 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.

Romo to the rescue: QB stops to fix flat

Tony Romo: Pro Bowler, playboy quarterback and, apparently,
a Good Samaritan handy with an air compressor. A couple says
Romo helped them patch a flat tire on the side of a busy street
last weekend after the Dallas Cowboys star returned home from a
season-opening win at Cleveland. Bill and Sharon White told
the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that at least 100 drivers ignored
their broken-down Mercury before someone stopped late Sunday.
Sharon White said a well-dressed man “with something strange
on his chin” walked up and offered a hand. Romo needed 13
stitches after his chin was split open in the 28-10 win over
the Browns. He bent down and helped the Whites get their faulty
air compressor to fill up the tire. Sharon White said she
asked twice before Romo confirmed her suspicions about the
do-gooder’s identity. “I did something no 50-year-old woman
should be doing, but I screamed real loud, and then jumped up
and hugged him,” Sharon White told the newspaper in Thursday’s
editions. Bill White had a different reaction. “Don’t tell me
how you guys did,” he said he told Romo. “I’m going home to
watch it.”
