Chambers misses practice, could miss game
SAN DIEGO – Chargers wide receiver Chris Chambers missed
practice Thursday and it’s likely that he’ll miss Sunday
night’s home game against New England.
Chambers, who has five touchdown catches, sprained his
ankle Sunday in a loss at Miami.
Chambers said he can’t remember a similar injury putting
him on the sideline.
“It really doesn’t compare because I haven’t had much the
last two, three years,” Chambers said. “In the offseason,
you may tweak a hamstring, you may do something but the
offseason’s nothing. Whereas getting it in the thick of
the season, I haven’t had this come up in an awful long
time so I just gotta manage it the best way I can.”
Goodell addresses souring economy’s effect on NFL
SAN ANTONIO – The NFL faces challenges in weathering
the economic downturn despite the game’s popularity,
commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday.
Responding to questions during a business leaders
luncheon, Goodell said the NFL is not recession proof,
citing stadium financing and struggles by the league’s
sponsors as specific problems.
Borrowing money has become difficult and expensive as
credit has tightened, potentially hampering stadium
projects, and many companies that the league relies on
for sponsorships have had to cut back.
Fans, worried about their household finances, are feeling
the effects also, he said.
“We’re all feeling the pinch right now, some more than
others, and it’s something we want to remain sensitive
to,” Goodell said, speaking at the University of the
Incarnate Word. The school next fall will field the
city’s first college football team since the 1970s.
San Antonio, a fast-growing city on the southern end of a
football-crazy state, wants an NFL franchise, but Goodell
said expanding the number of teams in the league isn’t
being seriously considered.
The only expansion being analyzed is the length of the
regular season. He’s said several times he’d like to move
two of the four preseason games into the regular season,
taking the regular season up to 18 games.
“I don’t believe the quality of our preseason game is up
to NFL standards,” he said, though he noted no decision
has been made on whether to pursue the expansion.
Such a move would require agreement from the players’
union and changes to television contracts.

Seahawks expect Hasselbeck to play, despite missed practices
RENTON, Wash. – Status quo for Seahawks quarterback Matt
Hasselbeck. Still no practice. Still on for Sunday’s game
against Green Bay.
The only thing that changed for the three-time Pro Bowl
passer on Thursday from Wednesday was the color of the
team cap he was wearing — conspicuous neon green instead
of blue. He again stood and watched practice with a black
wrap over his bruised right knee.
One day after coach Mike Holmgren said Hasselbeck “has to
play” for the Seahawks (1-3) against the Packers (2-3),
third-string quarterback Charlie Frye again ran the
offense. No. 2 quarterback Seneca Wallace is out
indefinitely with a calf injury.
Offensive coordinator Gil Haskell reiterated that
Hasselbeck will play even if he doesn’t practice Friday,
but Haskell would prefer that the No. 1 quarterback get
one day of work in this week with a jumbled receiving
corps.
Haskell was asked if Seattle’s starter since 2002, who
set most of the team’s passing records for a season in
2007 but is the NFC’s lowest-rated passer this season,
is one guy who doesn’t need to practice to play.
“No, you’re never there as a quarterback, because it’s
the rhythm,” Haskell said. “Especially now, with the new
receivers.”
Seattle had six wide receivers hurt through last month.
Deion Branch is out indefinitely with a bruised heel.
Koren Robinson had a second consecutive good day of
practice and says his sore knee feels better than at any
time since he signed last month. He may make his season
debut against the Packers, for whom he played in 2006-07.
Robinson was smiling Thursday over the recent birth of a
baby girl.
Bobby Engram will play in his second game of the season
with Keary Colbert and Billy McMullen also in prominent
roles. The latter two signed last month.
“I think every team knows that they’re going to face
adversity at some point and ours came just right at the
beginning,” Hasselbeck told reporters in Green Bay this
week.

Winslow hospitalized with an undisclosed illness
BEREA, Ohio – Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow
has been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness.
Coach Romeo Crennel said Friday that Winslow was kept
overnight at the Cleveland Clinic. Winslow had been
feeling ill for several days and the team sent him to
the doctor Thursday for further tests and evaluation.
Crennel didn’t know when the 25-year-old player will be
discharged.
Winslow has had four operations on his right knee, and
following one of them needed surgery after he got a staph
infection. He missed the 2005 season because of a near-
fatal motorcycle crash.
He made the Pro Bowl last season after making 82 catches
for 1,106 yards.
