Saints cut kicker and punter

The New Orleans Saints have released kicker Taylor Mehlhaff
and punter Ben Graham, leaving the team to spend its bye week
trying to fill each position for a third time this season.
Team officials confirmed the cuts Tuesday night, hours after
head coach Sean Payton had met with reporters. Payton had not
indicated that any roster moves were planned. Mehlhaff, who
the Saints drafted last spring but cut after training camp,
was brought back to replace injured kicker Martin Gramatica
in Week 6. In three games since, Mehlhaff was 3-of-4 on field
goals and 9-of-10 on extra points. He missed an extra point
in last Sunday’s 37-32 victory in London over the San Diego
Chargers. The Saints have had five different kickers on their
active roster during the past three seasons, the other being
Olindo Mare, Billy Cundiff and John Carney. Carney, now 44,
has been kicking for the New York Giants this season. Graham
replaced Steve Weatherford, who was cut after the Saints’
loss to Carolina on Oct. 19. Graham’s only appearance for
the Saints came last Sunday in London. He punted three times,
averaging 42 yards. Weatherford, who was signed by Kansas City
last week, was the Saints’ only punter from the beginning of
the 2006 season, when he was a rookie, until he was cut less
than two weeks ago.

Falcons T Baker to be examined by hip specialist

The Atlanta Falcons are sending rookie lineman Sam Baker to
a pair of specialists after an injured hip failed to improve
with treatment. Baker, a first-round pick who had been
starting at left tackle, will not play in Sunday’s game at
Oakland and it’s not known when he might return, coach Mike
Smith said. “We’ve aggressively treated it and it has not
responded,” Smith said Tuesday, an off day for the players.
“Our medical staff suggested he goes and seeks other opinions.
Like with all our players, we want to do our due diligence.
Sam will be missing practice for the next couple of days
getting his hip looked at.” Baker’s hip appeared to be
improving last week. He returned to practice and Smith
thought he would play against Philadelphia. When the
problem flared up again, Baker didn’t dress for the 27-14
loss to the Eagles. Todd Weiner took over at left tackle
but wasn’t able to finish the game because of an ailing
knee. While Smith believes Weiner will be healthy enough to
play against the Raiders, the Falcons are likely to make a
roster move to bolster their line depth. “That’s something
we’re looking at,” the coach said. “We can’t rule it out.”
Baker, the Falcons’ second pick of the first round after
quarterback Matt Ryan, won the starting job in training
camp but has endured an injury-plagued season. He also
missed time with a concussion. His ailing hip will be
examined by two specialists. “Sam is such a competitive
guy that he wants to get back as quick as he can,” Smith said.
“This is a 16-game season. It’s not a one-game season. We
want to make sure we do what’s in the best interest of the
player and the team for the long term.”

Smith, Woodson, Sharpe among Pro Hall candidates

Defensive end Bruce Smith, defensive back Rod Woodson and
tight end Shannon Sharpe are among first-year candidates for
induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The list
includes 110 players, seven coaches and 16 contributors,
including former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime
team owners Bud Adams, Jerry Jones, Art Modell and Ralph
Wilson. Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who
will be announced later this month as semifinalists. The
field will then be narrowed to 15 by a mail ballot. The
inductees will be selected from among those 15 and the two
senior nominees previously announced, Bob Hayes and Claude
Humphrey. They were selected in August by a senior selection
committee. The class of inductees will be chosen at the
selection committee’s annual meeting on Saturday,
January 31, 2009, in Tampa, Fla., the day before the 2009
Super Bowl. As few as four and as many as seven can be
selected. To be considered for Hall of Fame election, a
nominated player or coach must be retired for at least five
years. A contributor, who has made outstanding career
contributions to pro football in capacities other than
playing or coaching, may still be active in his pro football
career.

Jets place RB Chatman, QB Ainge on IR

The New York Jets placed running back Jesse Chatman and
rookie quarterback Erik Ainge on injured reserve Tuesday.
Chatman injured his left knee during the Jets’ 28-24 victory
over Kansas City on Sunday and left the locker room on
crutches. Coach Eric Mangini said on Monday that the injury
appeared to be season-ending. Chatman, who signed with the
Jets as a free agent in March, missed the first four games
after being suspended without pay for violating the league’s
steroids and related substances policy. Chatman said he
tested for a diuretic – “something I never even heard of” -
that could be used as a masking agent. He had 8 yards on
five carries, two receptions for 5 yards and five special
teams tackles in three games. Ainge, who has an injured
right foot, was New York’s fifth-round pick out of
Tennessee and was inactive for every game this season. The
Jets still have three quarterbacks on their roster with
Brett Favre, Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff.

Cardinals sign Spach and release Celestin

The Arizona Cardinals signed tight end Stephen Spach to a
one-year contract Tuesday and released safety Oliver
Celestin. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Spach appeared in the
first two games this season for the New England Patriots as
a reserve before being released on Sept. 15. Celestin, a
five-year NFL veteran from Texas Southern, played in two
games for Arizona this season. The Cardinals also released
wide receiver Onrea Jones from the practice squad.

Raiders sign fullback to replace Griffith

The Oakland Raiders signed fullback Jason Davis on Tuesday
after placing starter Justin Griffith on the injured reserve
list with a season-ending knee injury. Davis had been on
the practice squad for the Chicago Bears before the Raiders
signed him to help replace Griffith. Griffith tore the ACL
in his right knee late in the third quarter of a 29-10 loss
to Baltimore on Sunday. He scored Oakland’s stayed in the
game for a few plays and managed to score Oakland’s only
touchdown on a 2-yard catch. He was hit hard by Ray Lewis
on the play and knocked out of the game. The injury left
the Raiders with only one healthy fullback, Luke Lawton,
who has mostly played special teams after being brought in
late in training camp when Oren O’Neal went down with a
season-ending knee injury. Davis started two years in
college at Illinois before spending the 2006 season in
injured reserve with Philadelphia with a knee injury. He
was on the Eagles’ practice squad last season and on the
Bears’ practice squad this year. The Raiders also waived
offensive lineman Seth Wand, who had been on the injured
reserve list with a knee injury.
