Jennifer Hudson to sing at the Super Bowl

Jennifer Hudson will make her first public appearance since
the killings of her mother, brother and nephew during sports’
grandest event – the Super Bowl. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy
confirmed Wednesday that Hudson will sing the national anthem
at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 1. E! News first
reported Tuesday that Hudson would perform. Hudson hasn’t made
a public appearance since her 57-year-old mother, Darnell
Hudson Donerson; 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson; and 7-year-old
nephew Julian King were slain in Chicago in October. Her estranged
brother-in-law has been charged in the killings. Hudson, who
had released her self-titled debut album shortly before the
killings, is also scheduled to sing at the Grammys’ MusiCares
event in Los Angeles a few days later. She is nominated for four
awards at the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards. The 27-year-old Hudson already
has an Oscar to her credit, a best supporting actress win for her
role in “Dreamgirls.” The former “American Idol” contestant’s
career was continuing its skyrocketing rise, with featured roles
in movies like “Sex and the City” and “The Secret Life of Bees,”
as well as her album release, when the slayings occurred.
The Super Bowl is one of the most viewed spectacles on television.
Bruce Springsteen is scheduled to sing during halftime of the pro
football championship game.

Seahawks’ Peterson to play in Pro Bowl

Seahawks linebacker Julian Peterson is going to the Pro Bowl as
an injury replacement for Tampa Bay’s Derrick Brooks. The Seahawks
said Tuesday that Peterson had gone from alternate to playing in
the game next month. This will be his fifth Pro Bowl appearance and
third in a row. He will be the Seahawks’ only representative in
Hawaii. Left tackle Walter Jones was selected for the ninth time
but will not play. Jones recently had microfracture surgery on his
knee. Peterson had five sacks and 83 tackles in 15 games this
season. He had 9.5 sacks and 10 sacks in his first two years with
the Seahawks, the highest totals of his nine-year career.
Peterson signed a $54 million, seven-year contract with $18.5
million guaranteed with Seattle before the 2006 season. He
spent his first six seasons with San Francisco.

Seahawks make Prince WR coach

Robert Prince was hired Tuesday as the Seahawks’ new wide
receivers coach, and coach Jim Mora is retaining a dozen members
of predecessor Mike Holmgren’s staff. Mora announced the hiring
of Prince from Jacksonville during his official introduction as
Holmgren’s replacement. Mora’s promotion from Seattle’s defensive
backs coach was decided a year ago. Prince worked with Mora in
Atlanta and San Francisco. Mora said he still wants to hire a
defensive backs coach to join new defensive coordinator Casey
Bradley, new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and new defensive
line coach Dan Quinn. Mora added that special teams coach
Bruce DeHaven will return. So will offensive line coach Mike Solari,
quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor, running backs coach Kasey Dunn and
assistant defensive backs coach Larry Marmie, among others.
Mike DeBord goes from assistant offensive line coach to tight
ends coach.

Saints promote Carmichael to offensive coordinator

The New Orleans Saints promoted Pete Carmichael Jr. to
offensive coordinator Monday and also hired former Northwestern
assistant Bret Ingalls as the team’s running backs coach.
Saints coach Sean Payton also promoted Aaron Kromer from running
backs coach to offensive line coach and Joe Lombardi from offensive
assistant to quarterbacks coach. Before joining the Saints, Kromer
was an offensive line assistant with Tampa Bay. “Pete’s promotion
is well-deserved and I can’t say enough about his ability,” Payton
said. “Aaron did a great job with the running backs last year,
particularly with the development of Pierre Thomas. … Moving
to the offensive line, where the majority of his NFL experience
is, was a natural progression on our staff, and he’ll also
contribute to our game-planning with the running game.” Carmichael
replaces Doug Marrone, who left late in the season to become head
coach at Syracuse. Carmichael has spent the past three seasons
tutoring quarterbacks and helping Payton develop the team’s passing
game. Payton calls his own plays, meaning his offensive
coordinator serves in an advisory role during games but still
helps develop offensive game plans during the week. Ingalls has
been in coaching for 23 years, the last three as offensive line
coach at Northwestern. “Bret is well-respected for his
knowledge and communication skills with players,” Payton
said. “He has a wealth of experience working with several
position groups and as a coordinator and I am very excited
with what he will bring to our coaching staff.”

Judge upholds $28.1M verdict against NFL union

A federal judge has upheld a jury award of $28.1 million to
retired football players who sued the NFL Players’ Association
for allegedly failing to properly market their images. The
judge said Tuesday there was sufficient evidence presented
at trial in November that the union actively sought to cut
out the retired players from lucrative contracts for the
benefit of current players. The jury said the union owed the
retirees $7.1 million in actual damages for failing to include
them in lucrative marketing deals with Electronic Arts Inc.,
the maker of the popular “Madden NFL” video games, and other
sponsorship agreements. The jury also ordered $21 million
punitive damages. Distribution of the money will be determined
later.
