Detroit columnist resigns after Lions flap

A Detroit News sports columnist has left the paper, two weeks
after he was criticized for asking Lions coach Rod Marinelli
if he had wished his daughter married a better defensive
coordinator. Rob Parker resigned last week, managing editor
Don Nauss said Tuesday. Parker declined to comment on his
departure. Joe Barry is Marinelli’s son-in-law and was defensive
coordinator during Detroit’s 0-16 season. On Dec. 21, after a
42-7 loss to New Orleans, Parker asked Marinelli about his
daughter’s decision to marry Barry. “Anytime you attack my
daughter, I’ve got a problem with that,” Marinelli said.
Parker said he wasn’t trying to hurt the coach or his family.
He wanted to “lighten the moment” after a rough loss. Nauss,
however, said the question was “inappropriate and unprofessional.”
“We said we were taking the matter seriously and we would deal
with it,” he said. “Draw your own conclusions about what
transpired. I have to emphasize Rob submitted his resignation
and we accepted it. It was a voluntary action.” Marinelli and
his son-in-law were fired after the Lions’ winless season.
Barry’s father, assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry,
also was dismissed. Parker’s question drew on-air fire from
Fox football analyst Terry Bradshaw, who called him a
“total idiot.”

Bears fire linebackers coach

The Chicago Bears fired linebackers coach Lloyd Lee on Tuesday,
the latest move after the team finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs
for the second straight year. Lee, who joined the team in 2004,
was in his first year as linebackers coach. He spent his first
two seasons as a defensive quality control coach and assisted
with the linebackers in 2006 and defensive backs last season.
Lee’s dismissal comes after the team got rid of defensive backs
coach Steven Wilks last week. And defensive line coach Brick Haley
is expected to take a similar job at LSU. The Bears expected to
contend in the NFC and get back to the postseason for the first
time since the 2006 Super Bowl season. After stumbling to 7-9
last season, a once-elite defense struggled again, particularly
against the pass. Chicago ranked 30th against the pass and 21st
overall.

Bruce Smith, Rod Woodson first-time HOF finalists

Career sacks leader Bruce Smith, Rod Woodson, Shannon Sharpe
and John Randle are among the 15 finalists for the Pro Football
Hall of Fame, the only first-year eligible players to make the
final round this year. Joining them will be two contributors:
former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Buffalo Bills owner
Ralph Wilson, as well as two senior nominees selected last
August by the Senior Committee: former Atlanta defensive end
Claude Humphrey and former Dallas wide receiver Bob Hayes.
Between four and seven candidates will be elected in the
balloting that will take place in Tampa on Jan. 31, the day
before the Super Bowl. The field was narrowed by the Hall’s
44-member board of selectors from 133 to 25 before reducing
it to the final 15. Of the other finalists, only former
Pittsburgh center Dermontti Dawson and former Seattle defensive
lineman Cortez Kennedy have not been finalists before.
The rest: wide receivers Cris Carter and Andre Reed; defensive
end Richard Dent; guards Russ Grimm, Bob Kuechenberg and Randall
McDaniel; and linebacker Derrick Thomas. Smith played from
1985-1999 with Buffalo, then spent four years in Washington.
He finished with 200 sacks, the most since they began an
official statistic in 1982. Woodson, who played cornerback
and safety from 1987-2003 with Pittsburgh, Baltimore and
Oakland – and also played some offense – had 72 interceptions.
Sharpe, who played for Denver and Baltimore from 1990-2003,
holds the records for receptions by a tight end with 815.
And Randle had 137 sacks from defensive tackle for Minnesota
and Seattle from 1990-2003.

Vick wants to sell Ga. home at auction

Michael Vick is asking a bankruptcy judge to allow him to
sell his eight-bedroom home in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth
at auction. The house has been on the market for more than a
year and is listed at $4.1 million. The imprisoned former NFL
star disclosed the auction plans Tuesday in a new financial
disclosure statement filed in his bankruptcy case in Newport
News. According to the statement, real estate agents have
shown the house more than 30 times to potential buyers and
have aggressively marketed the property. Vick’s lawyers now
are preparing a motion seeking permission to sell the house
to the highest bidder at an auction on or around February 16.
Vick is serving a 23-month sentence for a federal dogfighting
conspiracy.

Bengals: MRI shows Palmer won’t need surgery

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer won’t need surgery on his
right elbow and should be ready for the team’s regular offseason
workouts. Team spokesman Jack Brennan said Tuesday night the
latest MRI on Palmer’s elbow indicates the quarterback won’t
need an operation to repair a ligament and tendon partially
torn from the bone. Palmer hurt the elbow during a 26-23
overtime loss to the Giants in the third week of the season
and played in only one more game. Instead of getting reconstructive
surgery, Palmer chose to rest the elbow for two months and see
if it healed.

Ex-NFL player charged with rape released on bail

A former NFL lineman and high school football coach in Walpole
has been released on bail as he awaits trial on charges he raped
a 15-year-old girl. Daniel Villa posted $7,500 bail Tuesday and was
fitted for an electronic monitoring bracelet. The conditions of
Villa’s bail include staying away from children under 16.
The judge declined to say where Villa will be staying. His next
court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 28. Villa played six seasons
for the New England Patriots during a 12-year NFL career. He
pleaded not guilty last week to charges including three counts
of rape of a child over 14. Prosecutors say Villa was once the
girl’s coach, and at one point sent her 500 text message in a
single month.
