Patriots claim DB Lockett, release WR Lewis

The New England Patriots have claimed rookie defensive back
Bret Lockett off waivers from Cleveland and released receiver
Greg Lewis. Lockett was signed by the Browns as a rookie free
agent out of UCLA in May. Lewis was acquired by the Patriots
from Philadelphia in a trade in March after playing his first
six NFL seasons with the Eagles. He has 127 receptions for
1,699 yards and seven touchdowns in 90 career games. The
Patriots also signed seven players to their practice squad:
defensive linemen Titus Adams, Adrian Grady and Darryl Richard;
offensive tackle Patrick Brown; wide receiver Terrence Nunn;
quarterback Isaiah Stanback and cornerback DeAngelo Willingham.

KR Jones fails physical, won’t rejoin Panthers

The Carolina Panthers may have use an inexperienced, fumble-
prone duo returning punts in the season opener. Attempts to
bring back last year’s return man, Mark Jones, were derailed
Monday when he failed a physical. Jones was cut by Tennessee
last week after being slowed by a hamstring injury in the
preseason. The Panthers were looking for an upgrade after
Kenny Moore and Captain Munnerlyn struggled fielding punts
in exhibition games. Munnerlyn is a rookie, while Moore is a
second-year pro who has never appeared in a regular-season game.
Rookie Mike Goodson is expected to return kickoffs Sunday
against Philadelphia. The Panthers released their return man
from 2007, Ryne Robinson, last week.

Injured QB Cassel returns to Chiefs practice

Quarterback Matt Cassel appeared on Kansas City’s practice
field Monday for the first time since injuring his left knee
on Aug. 29, but his status for Sunday’s opener at Baltimore
remained unclear. Cassel, who signed a six-year contract for
a guaranteed $28 million, injured his knee on the third play
of the third preseason game against Seattle. He was in full
uniform Monday and did most of the conditioning drills in the
short period the media were permitted to watch. If he does not
start at Baltimore, the Chiefs would probably go with Brodie
Croyle. Coach Todd Haley was evasive whether Cassel would
play Sunday. “I think that as the week goes on, we’ll know a
little bit more,” said Haley. “We’ll know a little bit more
with Matt for sure. But it was good that he was out there. He
was able to get through some things. As the week goes on a
little further, we’ll know a little more as far as where he’s
at.” Cassel’s backups, Croyle and Tyler Thigpen, were both
inconsistent as the Chiefs went 0-4 in Haley’s first preseason
as their coach. Cassel, who stepped in for an injured Tom Brady
with New England last year and won 11 games, hit 11 of 19 passes
for 114 yards and one TD. Croyle saw the most action and was
22 of 44 for 271 yards. The offense scored only two touchdowns
in four preseason games. “It’s good this is a long week. That
will help with anybody who’s nicked up,” said Haley. “I would
say generally you would need to have a full practice to have a
chance to play. Generally, you need to have a full Friday
practice to have a chance.”

Saints sign rookie LB Arnoux, place him on IR

The New Orleans Saints have signed rookie linebacker Stanley
Arnoux to a four-year contract and placed him on injured
reserve. He will miss the 2009 season. Drafted in the fourth
round out of Wake Forest, the 6-foot, 232-pound Arnoux tore
his left Achilles’ tendon during his first practice of rookie
camp in May and has been unable to practice since. Financial
terms of his new contract were not released. During his
college career, Arnoux started 42 of 51 games for the
Demon Deacons. He was credited with 245 tackles, five
sacks, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and
four fumble recoveries.

The Miami Dolphins have waived tight end David Martin and
claimed Davon Drew off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens to
replace him. The Dolphins made the announcement Monday. Drew
was selected in the fifth round by the Ravens this year. The
former East Carolina star was battling an ankle injury late
in training camp and will be the fourth tight end on Miami’s

last season for Miami. The Dolphins also finalized their
practice squad Monday, which includes: defensive end Ryan Baker,
cornerback Will Billingsley, linebackers J.D. Folsom and Danny
Lansanah, offensive linemen Nate Garner and Mark Lewis, and
receivers James Robinson and Julius Pruitt.

Denver Broncos release wide receiver Jackson

The Denver Broncos have waived fourth-year wide receiver
Chad Jackson. The move was announced Monday. Jackson joined the
Broncos as a free agent last October. He totaled eight kickoff
returns for 162 yards and made a 19-yard catch in four regular-
season games for Denver. Denver acquired Jackson after New
England released him in August 2008. He was with the Patriots

Cowboys claim S White from Cincinnati

-Safety Marvin White has been claimed off waivers by the
Dallas Cowboys. White had started 13 games for the Cincinnati
Bengals since being a fourth-round pick out of TCU in 2007.
He fills the 53rd spot on the Cowboys’ roster. White played
a total of 27 games for Cincinnati, with 62 tackles, an
interception, eight pass breakups and a recovered fumble.
Dallas’ roster was at 52 after the final round of cuts, leaving
the club in search of one player.

Giants LB Antonio Pierce excused from practice

Middle linebacker Antonio Pierce missed the New York Giants’
practice Monday for personal reasons. Coach Tom Coughlin said
afterward that Pierce was excused from the roughly one-hour
workout. He refused to disclose the reason for Pierce’s absence.
Pierce was not immediately available for comment. The Giants
open the regular season Sunday at home against Washington.
Pierce played for the Redskins before signing with New York
in 2005, and he said on Twitter over the weekend that he
considered playing them like an annual Super Bowl. Pierce has
led the Giants in tackles for the last three seasons. He has
missed only four regular-season games in his four years with
the club. Pierce recently missed the second and third preseason
games with a foot injury, but he returned to action Thursday,
playing the first two series in the exhibition finale against
the New England Patriots. Pierce spent much of the last 10
months in the spotlight after helping former teammate Plaxico
Burress when the wide receiver accidentally shot himself in
the thigh in a New York City nightclub in late November.
Pierce drove Burress to the hospital and then took the gun
that Burress used back to his home in New Jersey, later
arranging to get it back to the wounded receiver’s home.
It was what any friend would do for another, Pierce said
weeks ago in defending his actions. He also expressed no
regret for helping Burress after a Manhattan grand jury
decided not to indict him on charges of carrying Burress’
unlicensed firearm in the aftermath of the shooting.
