Packers C Wells has setback with lower back injury
Green Bay Packers center Scott Wells had a setback with his
injured lower back after returning to practice Monday, putting
his availability in doubt for the season opener against Minnesota.
Since the end of the Packers’ offseason practice program, Wells
has been dealing with what has been described as a “trunk” injury
involving his lower back muscles, limiting his availability in
training camp practices and preseason games. Packers coach
Mike McCarthy said the team still was gathering information
on Wells’ injury. “I think it was 16 days that he has been
going through the rehab, and this is unfortunate,” McCarthy
said Tuesday. “I know Scott is frustrated, but he had a setback
at yesterday’s practice.” Wells’ limited availability has
forced the Packers to shift guard Jason Spitz to center for
much of camp, and the Packers are still sorting through their
options at guard. The Packers started Daryn Colledge at left
guard and Tony Moll at right guard in their final preseason
game. Add in a nagging hamstring injury to running back
Ryan Grant, and there are some concerns about the Packers’
running game going into Week 1. “It’s a concern with the
whole offensive scheme and what you are trying to do, but
we’ve trained for this particular situation,” McCarthy said.
“I didn’t think we would be experiencing it in Week 1, but
that’s part of the game. I’m not really concerned about it.
I’m just planning and working through it.” McCarthy said
Grant sat out Tuesday’s practice because of soreness, but
was likely to practice Thursday. The team does not practice
Wednesday.
Cowboys release CB Oglesby, clearing roster space
The Dallas Cowboys released cornerback Evan Oglesby, a move
that clears a spot on the 53-man roster that could be used
to re-sign safety Keith Davis. Oglesby, who was released
Tuesday, played eight games for the Cowboys last season,
recording two tackles on defense and three on special teams.
The move clears a spot that could be used for Davis, who
reached an agreement in principle with the Cowboys. The
former Dallas safety and special teams standout signed a
two-year free agent deal with Miami in March but was cut
before the Dolphins’ final preseason game.

Bucs trade Buenning, acquire Mahan
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded backup guard Dan Buenning
to the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed draft pick Tuesday,
then replaced the fourth-year pro by acquiring center-guard
Sean Mahan from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Buenning was a
fourth-round draft pick in 2005 and started 23 of 25 games
he played in three seasons with Tampa Bay. Mahan, who started
16 games at center for the Steelers in 2007, was a fifth-round
pick of the Bucs in 2003. He appeared in 57 games, including
36 starts, for Tampa Bay from 2003-2006.
Pittsburgh received an undisclosed pick in the 2009 draft.
Raiders release Joseph to make way for Lelie
The Oakland Raiders released defensive tackle William Joseph
on Tuesday to create room on the roster for receiver Ashley
Lelie. Lelie officially signed his one-year contract Tuesday,
forcing the Raiders to create a roster spot for him. They did
it by cutting ties with Joseph, who made little impact after
signing as a free agent in the offseason. Lelie joined the
Raiders just days after being cut by the 49ers. He had 10
catches for 115 yards last season for San Francisco while
struggling with injuries, including a strained quadriceps.

NFL honors Upshaw at all 32 games
The NFL will honor the late Gene Upshaw with his initials and
his uniform number stenciled on the field for all 16 games
this opening weekend. The league had announced that all NFL
players would wear a patch all season with the initials “GU”
and the number 63, his former uniform number to honor the Hall
of Fame guard and longtime union leader, who died two weeks ago.
It originally announced they also would be stenciled on the
field for the season opener at Giants Stadium between the
Redskins and Giants and for the Denver-Oakland game at Oakland,
where Upshaw played his entire 15 seasons. It extended that
Tuesday to all games. A video tribute to Upshaw will also be
shown.
Jaguars elevate CB Gardner from practice squad
The Jacksonville Jaguars elevated cornerback Isaiah Gardner
from the practice squad to the active roster and waived defensive
end Brent Hawkins on Tuesday. Gardner was originally signed
as an undrafted rookie free agent in April out of Maryland and
was waived in final roster cuts Saturday. The Jaguars also
added receiver D’Juan Woods and offensive tackle Cliff Louis
to the practice squad and waived cornerback Rashod Moulton
from the practice squad. Woods was on the practice squad all
of last season. Louis, a 6-foot-8, 315-pounder from Morgan
State, was waived by Cleveland and the New York Giants
during the preseason.

Police: Jags’ Taylor yelled at officers repeatedly
Jaguars running back Fred Taylor was ordered out of his car
at gunpoint, patted down and handcuffed while a K-9 unit
searched his vehicle for drugs outside a Miami Beach nightclub
over the weekend, according to a police report released Tuesday.
Taylor yelled at officers repeatedly and was arrested and charged
with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, after they advised him
three times to quiet down, according to Miami Beach Police.
“As officers began to check vehicle for weapons, defendant became
vocal again and attempted to (incite) the crowd of bystanders,”
the report said. “Defendant really became vocal when drug dog
checked for narcotics. “He was advised to quiet down … for
a third time. When defendant did not and continued his loud
behavior, he was arrested.” Taylor insisted Monday he wasn’t
actually arrested; he said he was just issued a citation.
“At this point, I just want to go left of it and take the high
road, whether I’m right or wrong. At the end of the day, I’m
going to feel more right than wrong,” Taylor said Monday,
suggesting he was provoked by officers. According to the report,
police were called to Club Cristal around 4 a.m. Saturday to
respond to an altercation. When officers arrived, they were
advised that there might be firearms in a green Mercedes Benz,
Taylor’s wife’s car. They then ordered Taylor and his friends
out of the car, which irritated Jacksonville’s all-time leading
rusher and ultimately led to his arrest. “Right now, I’m humbled
by it,” Taylor said. “I’ll continue to move forward and do
whatever I’ve got to do to let this blow over.”
