Vikings bench Tarvaris, promote QB Gus Frerotte

The Vikings have benched QB Tarvaris Jackson. Gus Frerotte
will start this week’s game against the Panthers. The coach
expects the fifteen-year veteran will be the team’s QB for
the rest of the season. Jackson has been at the helm during
the Vikings’ 0-2 start, and coach Brad Childress cited a
lack of an “aggressive mentality” for Jackson’s demotion.
“I saw it through the end of last year with him and I saw
it in training camp. I saw it in the first two games of the
preseason with Tarvaris,” Childress said in a conference
call today. “And I haven’t seen it in the last two games,
and obviously I think it coincided with his injury.” Jackson
suffered a sprained right MCL in the team’s second preseason
game, Aug. 16 at Baltimore. “Whether that affected it or not,
I don’t know. But I do know that you have to have a gunslinger
mentality back there. Part of that may be experience. I think
Gus’ experience and approach will give us the edge we need at
that position.”

Buccaneers’ Elbert Mack suspended for helmet-to-helmet hit

The NFL suspended Buccaneers cornerback Elbert Mack for one
game for violating player safety rules with a helmet-to-
helmet hit on Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan. It is Mack’s
second violation for a flagrant hit. His first came in the
final preseason game against former Houston quarterback
Alex Brink, a hit that earned Mack a $5,000 fine for un-
necessary roughness. This time, the league determined that
Mack launched himself into Ryan in a specific violation of
the player safety rules. And it’s clear the league is taking
a strong stance regarding player safety rules.

Ankle sprain could sideline Colts’ Sanders for six weeks

All-Pro safety Bob Sanders could miss four to six weeks with
a high ankle sprain sustained during the Indianapolis Colts’
win last Sunday over Minnesota. Team president Bill Polian
said during a taping of his weekly TV show Tuesday night that
the league’s defensive player of the year could also have
arthroscopic “cleanup” surgery on one of his knees while he’s
recovering from the ankle injury. “He will be back, that is
for sure,” Polian told WISH-TV. “At this point we are not sure
of the severity, but four to six is the reasonable assumption
at this time.” Sanders hurt his right ankle during the second
half of Sunday’s 18-15 win over Minnesota, adding his name to
a growing list of injured Colts players.
